Looking down on the Peak Forest Canal

The Peak Forest Canal, viewed here from the Manchester Road bridge, was built at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. On the right are 19th century warehouses. On the left are 21st century houses built on the site of the former Automasters Enginering Works.

The Peak Forest Canal alongside Aldi

Behind the fence on the left is the Aldi supermarket. Underneath is the towpath of the Peak Forest Canal. The towpath changes sides here by means of a roving bridge - see Manchester Road Roving Brdige.

Behind the fence on the other side of the canal is a footpath that is signposted "Over Yonder" but actually leads to the Tameside Animal Rescue Sanctuary.

Sign of the Cheshire Ring

The sign for the Cheshire Ring pub features canal boats on the nearby Peak Forest Canal.

The Cheshire Ring is a 97 mile long circular canal route with 92 locks. It takes in the whole of the Macclesfield Canal and parts of the Trent and Mersey, Bridgewater, Rochdale, Ashton and Peak Forest Canals. More information can be found on the Pennine Waterways website.

The Cheshire Ring pub can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Moorside Place nearing completion

The last of the new houses at Moorfield Place facing the Peak Forest Canal seem to be nearly completed.

See the ones alongside Manchester Road on Hyde DP Xtra.

The willows are as always weeping over their reflection in the canal.

Across Manchester Road Roving Bridge

My posting yesterday on Hyde Daily Photo Vol.2 showed the Manchester Road bridge over the Peak Forest Canal and my posting on Hyde DP Xtra showed the view of the canal from the north side of the bridge and Manchester road as it crossed the bridge.

This view is of the original "roving bridge" on the south side of the roadway. The towpath crosses sides here. It comes in from the left here, crosses the top of the bridge and then turns under the bridge on the other side. Narrowboats on the canal were originally horse-drawn and the arrangement of the "roving bridge" allow the horse to be led over the bridge without the necessity of unhitching it from the boat.

There is another photograph of this bridge on Old Hyde which may give you a better idea of it.

Weekend in Black & White: Wharfinger Warehouse

The three-storey Wharfinger Warehouse was erected by the Peak Forest Canal Company in 1828. It is a Grade II listed building now used as offices by the Tameside & Glossop Primary Care Mental Health Service.

Manchester Road Canal Bridge was built in 1804. The original elliptical-arch tunnel which is grooved for stop planks was widened to the north in the mid 1800s with a truncated elliptical keystone arch which is now partly obscured by the 20th century footpath bridge.

In September 2012 Canadian Geese could stand in Moorside Place on the right, but now that more houses are being constructed alongside the canal, it may soon look as hemmed in as it did in January 2008 before the Automasters Works was demolished.

View the canal from the top of the bridge on Hyde DP Xtra.

Despite appearances this is an urban stretch of canal, but in this early morning scene the trees are reflected appealingly in the water.

I'm taking a brief holiday and for while I'm away I've scheduled posts using photographs by visitors to the area.

ABC Wednesday: U is for Underwater

Underwater?

Are you wondering where the water is?

It is behind the upper fence.

This is the tunnel on the track from Gibraltar Row to Thistley Fields that passes under the Apethorn Aqueduct on the Peak Forest Canal.

As you pass through it you are literally underwater.

Ripples on the Peak Forest Canal

The latest in my series of photographs of the Peak Forest Canal from the Manchester Road bridge was taken yesterday morning.

Whilst much of the UK was blanketed in snow, here we had only a few flakes but it was bitterly cold with an icy wind blowing. So strong was the wind that it was creating ripples in the normally calm surface of the canal.

On the left the construction work at the former Automasters site has moved nearer to the new housing estate. Whether they are landscaping the area or building some light commercial units, as they have done lower down Manchester round, I'm not sure. We will see no doubt in due course.
