Undertaker's car park under water

After heavy rain the car parking space for the undertakers on the corner of Market Street and Dowson Road is inundated by a huge puddle.

The reflection on the right is of the back of a house on Thornley Street, while the trees on the left are on Dowson Road.

See a wider, coloured view on Geograph.

Looking down on the Peak Forest Canal

The Peak Forest Canal, viewed here from the Manchester Road bridge, was built at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. On the right are 19th century warehouses. On the left are 21st century houses built on the site of the former Automasters Enginering Works.

The former Unity Inn

The Unity Inn on the corner of Oldham Street and Croft Street was closed in 2013 and has since been converted into residential use.

See how it looked in December 2012 before it was closed and in March 2013 when it was stripped of its signage.

The former Packhorse Inn

The Pack Horse Inn at Mottram in Longdendale was a stopping place for pack horse trains on the saltway from Cheshire through to Yorkshire.

I first showed you the Packhorse Inn and its sign back in July 2008.

Having being closed for more than year, owners Enterprise Inns, based in Solihull, were granted planning permission in 2013 to convert it into a single house. The conversion appears to be still unfinished.

Manchester Road, Kingston

This is the A57 road that connects Lincoln to Liverpool via Sheffield and Manchester. Here at Kingston it is approaching the Cheshire-Lancashire boundary. Long distance traffic now bypasses this road by using the motorway network but it remains a busy local route.

The cul-de-sac on the right is Hall Street. According to one of my twitter followers this was once known as Scholes Street.

A view down Hall Street is on Hyde DP Xtra.

T is for Towpath

The towpath of the Peak Forest Canal approaching Manchester Road.

On the left is a grade II listed former canal warehouse now used as offices.

On the right are new houses built on the site of the former Automasters engineering works.

Compare with the view in 2008 before the works was demolished - Hyde DP Vol.1, Automasters and with the view in 2011 before the new houses close to the canal had been built - Hyde DP Vol.1, Moorside Place.

Shadows at Church View

I first published the view from "Church View" on 3rd May 2009 and later on 31st March 2013 but this time I'm showing a view of the street itself.

The sign under the street name sign reads "Private Road No Parking".

ABC Wednesday: J is for John Street (Northern remnant)

When the roads on the north side of the centre of Hyde were demolished in the 1970s to make way for the M67 motorway, this small remnant of John Street survived. The four terraced houses at the end lie back-to-back with the former St Andrew's Mission which closed in the 1960s.

Shadows across Woodend Lane

The end of Woodend Lane from the top of Church Brow looking towards St George's Church.

There is just a feint glimpse of the church tower behind the foliage above the top of the houses on the right. The lych gate can be seen between the cars at the top of the photograph.

ABC Wednesday: G is for Gerrards, Gee Cross

In the 17th century, opposite the end of Apethorn Lane was a small group of cottages known as Gerrards Fold.

The Ashton family farmed there before they embarked on the cotton trade in the district.

Towards the end of the 19th century the old fold was converted into a large Elizabethan style house known as "The Gerrards".

James Bradley lived there around 1905, Gladstone stayed there too as did a ghost. The now disgraced Stuart Hall once wanted to buy the property but the then owner refused him.

At the turn of the 21st century the house was demolished and replaced by three-storey modern town houses.

For an old photograph see the Hydonian blog.

Stockport Road, Hattersley

The A560 at Hattersley from the junction with Ashworth Lane. The council demolished all the houses on the east side of Stockport in the mid-noughties. However one owner resisted all offers to purchase and remains. Wildflowers grow on the former garden of the adjacent boarded-up house.
