Hosepipe across Manchester Road

There was a dramatic fire a couple of weeks ago on Raglan Street which sent up a huge cloud of black smelly smoke.

I didn't photograph any of that but later in the day I was on a bus on Manchester Road. The fire services tackling the blaze had lain a hosepipe across the road to the fire hydrant at the top of Ann Street. Alfred Street which leads to Raglan Street was blocked off and a Police Community Support Officer was on duty.

The cyclist in the yellow jacket seems to have had problems getting across the pipes.

A report on the blaze can be found on the Manchester Evening News.

ABC Wednesday: T is for telephones and a timepiece

Despite the use of mobile telephones there are still many telephone boxes left in the UK. Many are the old red telephone boxes some of which have been granted listed building status and are thus legally preserved. Others like this one outside the Fiat dealership on Market Street are modern ones from which you can apparently send emails and text messages as well as make phone calls.

At least you could before some trashed it - see Hyde DP Xtra.

In the background, up the street, is the James North Clock which had previously stood in the grounds of the Slack Mill that closed in 1998 and was subsequently demolished. See a closer view of the timepiece in a post from February 2013.

Recycling: Blue, Green or Brown?

A blue coloured display on Hyde Civic Square on Saturday was promoting green recycling.

Some of the emphasis was on the brown bins supplied to most households for recycling waste food.

Broomstair Bridge Valve House

The A57 road from Manchester to Hyde crossing Broomstair Bridge over the river Tame. The building on the right is a "Valve House" belonging, originally, to Manchester Corporation Waterworks. The pipeline crossing in a girder bridge on the south side is part of the aqueduct carrying water from Woodhead to Manchester. Read more about the system on Old Hyde

See it in the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.

Over the bridge

A view across the footbridge on the western side of the bus station over the M67 motorway.

The chimney in the background belonged to the former Winterbotham's tripe dressing factory, now Hyde Industrial Supplies and survives as a support for mobile phone masts.

Wet shrubs by the closed conveniences

Back at the beginning of April I featured the shrubs on Greenfield Street outside the old Town Hall toilets that have been closed for more than six years.

Now here they are some three months later on a day when the rain is persistently precipitating.

The street round the corner is Water Street.

Friday Fences: Roadworks on Market Street

Market Street is disturbed by roadworks again. This photograph was taken a couple of weeks ago before I went on holiday to Blackpool. Then the disruption was confined to the pavements.

The work is still ongoing and is now affecting the junction with Union Street and causing traffic jams.

Take a look at the uncovered pipes and cables on Hyde DP Xtra.

Market Place before and after

Whilst work on the revamping of Hyde market ground was being undertaken, the area of Market Place in front of the White Lion, William Hills and Santander (formerly Abbey) Bank was used as a works site. Above is how it looked on the Saturday before Christmas. Below is how it looks three weeks later with everything finally cleared away.

Telecom Workers

Two yellow jacketed workers from BT are working at the telephone cabinet opposite Wild's Cards.

One is doing the required wireing whilst the other guards their blue tool box.

Wash & Go

Behind the "Leading Edge" hair and beauty salon on the corner of Dowson Road and Markland Street is the "Spa" hand car-wash. Maps of the early 20th century show this as the site of the Hyde Steam Laundry.

Ruby Tuesday: New bollards

I recently showed you a clear view of Corporation Street and noted that new retractable bollards had been erected since.

Several things have gone in the revamp of Hyde Market but the red telephone kiosks have remained.

Across the road a red car is passing the red-brick Town Hall.

Ruby Tuesday: Red Brick Substation by Clock Tower Close

The houses behind the wall are in Clock Tower Close, part of an estate of new houses built on the site of Slack Mills, home to James North whose firm patented the PVC glove in 1947.

The factory was demolished in 1998. To service the new houses an electricity sub-station was built using the same red brick design but on outside of the wall.

Market Renewal Phase 2

Compare if you will with my posts of 7th February 2012 and of 29th February 2012.

The telephone box is still where it was but the "Crown Pole" has gone as have the market stalls along the front. Traders have moved into the Northern half of the market ground while this half is renewed. Much of the area has been repaved and new stalls have been partially erected outside the Clarendon Mall.

In the background is the dome of what was original Brownson's and is now £-stretcher but which everyone remembers as Woolworths.

The scene is probably already a bit different as this was taken before my recent holiday and I've not been down into town since my return as yet.

A planter planted

As work on the renewal of Hyde Market continues, a "planter" has now been planted in front of the red telephone box on the corner of Market Street and Clarendon Street.

As I was taking this photograph a passer-by remarked that it looked like a giant ashtray.

I'm not sure where the red bricks on the pallet are destined to go.
