Signs approaching Broomstairs Bridge

A few yards further along Manchester Road from the view posted on Tuesday are these road signs.

Broomstair bridge over the river Tame was originally the boundary between Hyde, Cheshire and Denton, Lancashire. Now both towns are part of Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

Beyond the boundary sign are two warning road signs. One refers to horses which is not surprising as there is a stables on the left hand side and a bridleway on the opposite side of the road.

The other sign warns of cattle!

U is for Under the motorway

The Peak Forest Canal passing under the M67 motorway. The lights are covered in cobwebs.

T is for Towpath

The towpath of the Peak Forest Canal approaching Manchester Road.

On the left is a grade II listed former canal warehouse now used as offices.

On the right are new houses built on the site of the former Automasters engineering works.

Compare with the view in 2008 before the works was demolished - Hyde DP Vol.1, Automasters and with the view in 2011 before the new houses close to the canal had been built - Hyde DP Vol.1, Moorside Place.

Bridge #126

The bridge over the former Godley Junction to Apethorn Railway line, now utilised by the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network #62, connects Grange Road South with Grange Road North but only for pedestrians.

Bridge #43 at Godley Hill

This is the bridge under the Manchester to Glossop railway line at Godley Hill. The road under the line led from Station Road past the Kerry Foods factory to Godley Hall - see how it looked in March 2010

Since the building of the new road Kerry Way, access to Godley Hill from Station Road under this bridge (#43 on the Hadfield and Ardwick Junction line) has been blocked off.

The end of the line at Apethorn

Walking, cycling or riding a horse west along the Trans Pennine Trail will bring you to Apethorn Lane. A fence under the bridge prevents you walking any further as just round the bend is where the old Godley to Apethorn railway joins the existing line from Manchester via Hyde Central to Woodley and beyond.

Since then all traces of the former line beyond the bridge (now numbered 119) have been lost under the abundant vegetation as can be seen in yesterday's post V is for Vegetation.

New houses on Manchester Road

These new houses on Manchester Road past the bridge over the Peak Forest Canal are part of Moorfield Place built on the site of the former Automasters Engineering Works.

Crossover shadows at Hyde North

With the sun directly behind it, a perfect set of shadows is created along the pathway of the crossover bridge at Hyde North station.

This is the bridge from which I took the photograph of Hyde North Station published 4th April 2014.

Umbrella on the Trans Pennine Trail

When I was out the other week photographing first the blue sky over Swains Valley and then the flooded duckboards in Gower Hey Woods, followed by the steps out of the woods and before I recorded the clouds over the Trans Pennine Trail I discovered this umbrella stuck into the ground under the Dowson Road bridge. Knott Fold bridge can be seen in the distance.

Clouds over the Trans Pennine Trail

Earlier this week we had had a morning of heavy rain. In the afternoon the sun came out and I took walk down on the Trans Pennine Trail. Before long the dark threatening clouds returned. A couple of hours later after sunset the ground was covered in a layer of snow. By the morning though it had all thawed.

Bridge repairs off Canal Street

Workmen on the top of a scissor-platform are doing work on the railway viaduct carrying the Rose Hill (Marple) to Manchester (Piccadilly) line over Great Norbury Street, Manchester Road, the M67 and Dukinfield Road. This section accessed from Canal Street is between Manchester Road and the motorway. I assume they are probably pointing the stonework.

Approaching Knott Fold

The sign approaching Knott Fold Bridge (#121 on the former Cheshire Lines Committee route from Woodhead and Godley Junction to Apethorn and Stockport (Tiviotdale) reads:

HORSES SHOULD KEEP
TO THE GRAVEL PATH
WHERE PROVIDED

NO GALLOPING
The route is now part of the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Network Route #62. The gravel path on the left has been more-or-less reduced to a muddy track.

Winter solstice at Knott Fold

Looking under Knott Fold Bridge a couple of hours before sunset on the shortest day. The bridge (#121) crosses the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway line now used as the route for the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62.

Trimming the Trail

A hedge-cutting machine is trimming the edge of the banking on this stretch of the TransPennine Trail. Its tyres are churning up the ground of the bridlepath.

Reflections under Dowson Road Bridge

A month ago I reported that the puddle under Dowson Road Bridge over the Trans Pennine Trail had gone.

It is back again. The archway and the side of the bridge are reflected in the water.
