A Dinosaur in Hyde

On Easter Saturday some dinosaurs visited Hyde and roamed around town. The first arrived on the Civic Square about 10.45am. More came later and by mid-afternoon the place was crowded with people enjoying the market festivities.

I've been posting a daily photo of Hyde now for nine years with only a few days missing. Five years ago I put Hyde Daily Photo Vol. 1 (2006-2011) into archive mode. Now I am putting Vol. 2 into archive mode.

I shall continue to post photos of Hyde on Hyde Xtra but not necessarily every day. That blog was originally started by a spammer who copied many of the City Daily Photo Blogs. After a concerted effort the blog was closed down and I took over the URL in 2009 as a place to post extra photographs. If you have previously linked to us on your side-bar or elsewhere please update the link to follow Hyde Xtra.

I will still be posting periodically on all my other blogs and uploading photos to the Geograph Britain & Ireland project where you can contact me via my profile page.

This post is a contribution to Our World Tuesday.

My Camera-Shy Self Portrait

On the first day of every month the City Daily Photo Community comes together publishing photos from around the world with their interpretation of a chosen theme. Your Camera-Shy Self Portrait is the theme for April 1st.

I took this reflective shot in the window of the Cotton Bale public house when it was closed for refurbishment a few weeks ago.

See more contributions to the theme at this link.

Let's Talk Tripe again

When Jack Curvis - who was featured in 2006 on Hyde Daily Photo Vol.1 - retired a few years ago his tripe stall on Hyde Indoor Market was taken over by Lyndon Boot who continues to sell traditional tripe and cow heel as well as rag puddings, a range of low fat sausages and other delicacies.

A recent addition is a sculpture of a bull which has been firmly fixed above the stall.

A strange angle of reflection

This week's contribution to Weekend Reflections poses a strange question - and no I don't know the answer.

I was standing by the side of the NatWest bank on Market Street close to the cash dispenser (a.k.a. ATMS, hole-in-the-wall) and shooting up the street. A woman walked past me just as I was taking the photograph.

What seems strange to me though is that I have captured a reflection of the back of her head but surely that would happen if she was behind me but in fact she is in front of me.

I thought I knew about geometry and angles but now I'm not so sure. Maybe the metal-work around the ATM doesn't reflect in the same way an ordinary mirror does.

Blood Bikes Manchester

Blood Bikes Manchester were fund-raising on Hyde Civic Square last Saturday.

Blood Bikes Manchester is a registered charity, which offers an out of hours and free of charge urgent medical courier service to the NHS. They volunteer to play their part in saving peoples lives and save the NHS money that would otherwise be wasted on taxis or expensive couriers, but more than anything else they do it because they love it. More information on the Blood Bikes website.

Hyde Town Team

Hyde Town Team was formed in October 2012 to "try and bring vibrancy back into Hyde Town Centre". They have arranged a series of events, mostly on Hyde Civic Square, throughout the year.

Last Saturday they were giving away balloons whilst collecting donations for local food banks.

People reflected in the street

Reflections in a plate glass window of people and buildings in the Market Place including a puddle that is itself reflecting.

Bridge repairs off Canal Street

Workmen on the top of a scissor-platform are doing work on the railway viaduct carrying the Rose Hill (Marple) to Manchester (Piccadilly) line over Great Norbury Street, Manchester Road, the M67 and Dukinfield Road. This section accessed from Canal Street is between Manchester Road and the motorway. I assume they are probably pointing the stonework.

Bus stop reflections

This was intended to be a photograph of the trees by the bus stop on Market Street reflected in the mock-marble seating around the new flower planters at Hyde Civic Square.

But serendipity has stepped in and what I've actually captured is a little piece of street photography.

Walking Train

This is what is known as a "Walking Train" passing the Shell filling station on Dowson Road. The children who are all very well kitted out with red macs and wellington boots are presumably on their way to a pre-school nursery. These were followed a few minutes later by another train of similar length.

A pdf file on the KidsAllowed gives some rules for how a Walking Train should operate. It suggests among other things that:
The Walking Train Driver must set good behaviour standards and check for hazards whilst the Walking Train Conductor must ensure all children keep to the paths and do not trail behind.

When operating the Walking Train children should walk in pairs with the Walking Train Driver at the front and the Walking Train Conductor at the rear. Children should be positioned on the left away from the pavement kerb and a team member must be positioned nearest the kerb. Team members should hold hands with the younger children.

A team member will carry a back pack containing a supply of waterproof coats, mobile phone and First Aid kit.
