Weekend reflections in the River Tame in Black & White.

Taken from Lovers Lane across the river Tame to Jet Amber Fields. The river is the boundary between Hyde (Cheshire) and Denton (Lancashire) although both now come under the local authority known as Tameside Metropolitan Borough.

See the original photograph and read more about the river on Geograph.

Sluice Gates on the Peak Forest Canal

This sluice gate on the Peak Forest Canal allows water to run off into Wilson Brook. The houses behind the fence on the right are part of Moorfield Place which was built on the site of the former Automasters Engineering Works.

See how it looked in September 2012, earlier in February 2012, a year earlier in March 2011 and three years before that in March 2008 before the Automasters Works was demolished.

Give way to oncoming vehicles

Water Street is "pinched" at the point where there is a pedestrian crossing between two car parks.

Traffic coming down the street towards Manchester Road have to give way to vehicles coming up the street.

ABC Wednesday: G is for Godley Junction Station Yard

The original station yard at Godley Junction. The station closed in 1995 but trains on the line from Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop still pass by. This was taken from the side of the former Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) route to Apethorn Junction through fences and barbed wire that prevent access into the old station.

See how busy it once was on Old Hyde.

Clockwork Owl

In October 2012 the shop between Homefair blinds and Bosun's Fish Restaurant on Clarendon Street was The Lingerie and Fancy Dress Shop.

Back in June 2007 it was called Lingerie Bliss and before that Frilly Milly's.

Now it has gone in and its place is the Clockwork Owl Tattoo Studio.

Something yellow on Hamnett Street

I thought there was some work going on when I saw the cherry-picker-crane (actually a JLG lift) on Hamnett Street but in fact it was merely parked in the space between the hydroponics shop and the Job Centre. On the opposite side of the road is the Postal Sorting Office.

Across Manchester Road Roving Bridge

My posting yesterday on Hyde Daily Photo Vol.2 showed the Manchester Road bridge over the Peak Forest Canal and my posting on Hyde DP Xtra showed the view of the canal from the north side of the bridge and Manchester road as it crossed the bridge.

This view is of the original "roving bridge" on the south side of the roadway. The towpath crosses sides here. It comes in from the left here, crosses the top of the bridge and then turns under the bridge on the other side. Narrowboats on the canal were originally horse-drawn and the arrangement of the "roving bridge" allow the horse to be led over the bridge without the necessity of unhitching it from the boat.

There is another photograph of this bridge on Old Hyde which may give you a better idea of it.

Weekend in Black & White: Wharfinger Warehouse

The three-storey Wharfinger Warehouse was erected by the Peak Forest Canal Company in 1828. It is a Grade II listed building now used as offices by the Tameside & Glossop Primary Care Mental Health Service.

Manchester Road Canal Bridge was built in 1804. The original elliptical-arch tunnel which is grooved for stop planks was widened to the north in the mid 1800s with a truncated elliptical keystone arch which is now partly obscured by the 20th century footpath bridge.

In September 2012 Canadian Geese could stand in Moorside Place on the right, but now that more houses are being constructed alongside the canal, it may soon look as hemmed in as it did in January 2008 before the Automasters Works was demolished.

View the canal from the top of the bridge on Hyde DP Xtra.

Friday Fences: Russell Street

Behind the railings on the right is the storage area for Tameside Caravans. In 2011 the area was overgrown with cherry laurel. In 2012 it was overrun with Senecio Brachyglottis- greyi, a kind of New Zealand aster.

Now that seems to have been all cleared away and a grass verge laid on the inside of the compound. Some little yellow flowers are growing around the corner and can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Cupcakes & Delights

The latest stall to open upstairs in the inside market is "Cupcakes & Delights".

I can't speak for the cup cakes as we only sampled a couple of free ones from the chap at the market entrance who was promoting the opening of the stall - see the photo on Hyde DP Xtra - but we did buy a slice of quiche and some pieces of their home made pies - cheese & onion and chicken & mushroom - and they were delicious.

Sheikh's Grill and Rice Bar

Originally this was the Cheshire Cheese. After the pub closed it became the Cheshire Grill but after twelve months had transformed into the Desi Grill. By January 2013 that had closed and the upper storey had opened as a ladies-only gym called Fit Phat: Pretty Hot and Tempting. Now the downstairs portion has re-opened as Sheikh's Grill and Rice Bar.

Knott Fold Bridge Yet Again

It rained yesterday but briefly cleared mid-afternoon so I took a walk along the Trans Pennine Trail (former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway) and took yet another photograph of the bridge at Knott Fold.

Compare with how it looked in January 2012.

Friday Fences: Godley Turntable

This old fence forms the boundary of a former railway turntable on the Godley Junction to Apethorn railway line. The "Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC)" route opened in 1866.

I showed you the end of the line in my post of 9th August 2013.

Here is where trains heading for Fiddler's Ferry power station via Warrington Arpley would exchange locomotives. The whole point of the railway was to carry Yorkshire coal to Lancashire for burning in one way or another. Originally the trains were steam hauled but after electrification of the Woodhead line in the 1950s the class 76 electric locos would draw the train onto the branch and un-couple before running around and departing; subsequently, a diesel loco would appear and hook-on for the remainder of the trip. Freight services over Woodhead ended in 1981 and this line became redundant.

See how it looked in 2007 on Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1 and in 2010 on Hyde DP Xtra.

More photographs of the overgrown turntable can be found on today's post on Hyde DP Xtra.

See how it looked in the days of steam on Old Hyde.

Signs on The Theatre Royal

A "To let/may sell" notice has gone up on the side of the Theatre Royal.

Whilst that might seem like bad news for theatre lovers it isn't so as any interested party needs to understand that the theatre is a Grade 2 listed building. As such, listed building consent must be applied for in order to make any changes to the building which might affect its special interest.

The Theatre Royal Trust have drawn up an options appraisal which should allow the building to be used as a cinema/theatre in the future.

ABC Wednesday: E is for Empty

An empty stall on Hyde Market on a wet Monday morning.

But the streets aren't empty. The White Lion is open and the greengrocer's is busy.

The stall may be empty but there are expectations in the air.

Top end of Bradbury Street

The top end of Bradbury Street between Haughton Street and Dawson Street. On one side are terraced houses. On the other is part of the former Redferns Rubber Works which is connected to another part on Dawson Street via a closed bridge. Some parts of the works are used by a variety of small businesses and the main building supports a number of mobile phone masts. Bollards at the top of Bradbury Street prevent vehicular access onto Dawson Street.

People you know selling things that you want

The entrance to Hyde Indoor Market is from the Clarendon Shopping Centre. Outside is a big yellow kiddie-ride and above it now is a new blue sign giving the names of the various stalls inside. Their new slogan is "People you know selling things that you want".

Green Lane Bridge

The bridge at Green Lane over the former Godley to Apethorn Railway line has two archways. West of Green Lane the line became single-track and has been reclaimed for the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62. The double arch here allows good separation on the trail between cyclists/walkers and horseriders. I showed you the footpath junction, which here is just behind the photographer, in my post of 25th July.

East of Green Lane the footpath continues over Brookfold Lane bridge towards Godley Junction where a steel fence cuts off the electrified railway line from Manchester to Glossop and Hadfield.

There is a magpie on the bridge - take a closer look on Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Dowson Road

This was originally Swain Street which ended shortly behind the photographer. It led to a quarry through which flowed the Gower Hey Brook.

In the 1930s the quarry was filled in, the brook culverted and a new road built to Gerrards bypassing Stockport Road through Gee Cross.

The new road was named after Henry Enfield Dowson (1837-1925) who became the minister of Hyde Chapel in 1867 and served for 51 years.

So Swain Street became subsumed by Dowson Road.

Wet shrubs by the closed conveniences

Back at the beginning of April I featured the shrubs on Greenfield Street outside the old Town Hall toilets that have been closed for more than six years.

Now here they are some three months later on a day when the rain is persistently precipitating.

Friday Fences Follow-up shot

Following up on my shot from last Friday here is how it looked a few days ago.

It turns out that the space is going to be used by another large flower-planter similar to the two on the other side of the Civic Square as the Market Ground is now called.

Instead of proper benches folk will be able to sit on the reflective mock-marble edges.
