Spice is nice

The side of the herbs and spices kiosk is splattered with signs advertising all sorts of stuff. I'm not sure what some of the things actually are but the stall has being going for over 21 years so it is obviously doing a lot of people some good.

Hyde Nursing and Care Centre

Hyde Nursing and Care Centre operated by Meridian Healthcare Ltd is built on the site of Wards 1-3 of the former Hyde Hospital.

According to their website they provide general nursing care and nursing dementia (EMI Nursing) care for older people. Hyde Nursing Home is also the home to an intermediate care service called Grange View. Grange View services are provided by Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust. The Pennine Care team is made up of healthcare assistants, nurses and therapists who will help patients to recover and regain their independence following a hospital stay. This will include patients who have a long term condition, those who need help with dressings and wound care and people with mobility problems.

Local people generally continue to refer to Grange View as Hyde Hospital.

ABC Wednesday:C is for the Charred remains of former Care home Charlotte House

Charlotte House, the former care home on Albert Road caught fire in the early hours of the 16th December 2010. The home was in the process of being closed down and only a few residents were still living there. They all escaped safely. The building has now been put up for sale by auction and is due to go under the hammer next week. See how it looked four years ago in our post from May 2011.

Skywatch Friday: Newton Library err sorry Pharmacy

Today's photograph was taken less than a minute after the one I posted last week: Contrails over Talbot Road.

This is the view in the opposite direction over what used to be Newton Library but is now Newton Pharmacy.

If you look closely at last week's photo you'll see an aeroplane coming in on the left en route for Manchester Airport. Here it can be seen in the centre of the sky heading on its way with a couple of birds flying off on the left.

From books to pills and potions

This building used to be Newton Library - it closed in October 2012 - see Hyde DP Xtra for a pre-closure view.

Now it has been converted into a pharmacy so at least it is still providing some kind of local service.

See our post of 18th December 2014 for the latest on the state of the main library in Hyde.

Blood Bikes Manchester

Blood Bikes Manchester were fund-raising on Hyde Civic Square last Saturday.

Blood Bikes Manchester is a registered charity, which offers an out of hours and free of charge urgent medical courier service to the NHS. They volunteer to play their part in saving peoples lives and save the NHS money that would otherwise be wasted on taxis or expensive couriers, but more than anything else they do it because they love it. Above Caesars

In my recent post Barclays Reflections you saw, reflected in the bank's window, the windows above the colonnade across the street.

Under the colonnade is Caesars Bar & Café. It used to be Caesars Hair Team but the hairdresser relocated to Romiley last year. I suspect the café bar has kept the name to save on the costs of new signage.

On the left is a late night opening pharmacy.

The premises above Caesars, accessed via the blue door in between, are now the home of "Freedom Dancers" who according to their website "have been in the dance industry for a few years now and come to realize dance companies can offer so much more than just a dance school. We cater for all occasions as well as providing the dance school experience."

Free fish spa

The hair salon on Dowson Road was offering a free fish spa with all hair services recently.

Garra rufa fish exfoliation was all the rage a few years ago but I suspect its popularity must have waned a bit.

Weekend in Black & White: Wharfinger Warehouse

The three-storey Wharfinger Warehouse was erected by the Peak Forest Canal Company in 1828. It is a Grade II listed building now used as offices by the Tameside & Glossop Primary Care Mental Health Service.

Manchester Road Canal Bridge was built in 1804. The original elliptical-arch tunnel which is grooved for stop planks was widened to the north in the mid 1800s with a truncated elliptical keystone arch which is now partly obscured by the 20th century footpath bridge.

In September 2012 Canadian Geese could stand in Moorside Place on the right, but now that more houses are being constructed alongside the canal, it may soon look as hemmed in as it did in January 2008 before the Automasters Works was demolished.

View the canal from the top of the bridge on Hyde DP Xtra.

Sheikh's Grill and Rice Bar

Originally this was the Cheshire Cheese. After the pub closed it became the Cheshire Grill but after twelve months had transformed into the Desi Grill. By January 2013 that had closed and the upper storey had opened as a ladies-only gym called Fit Phat: Pretty Hot and Tempting. Now the downstairs portion has re-opened as Sheikh's Grill and Rice Bar.

Stop Smoking Bus

The "First Stop Health Bus" was parked on the Asda supermarket car park last week.

According to The First Stop Health Bus website it is a NHS Greater Manchester initiative which takes NHS services out of traditional settings and in to the heart of the community. It offers stop smoking advice and support via a range of methods as well as a range of health checks.

Pretty Hot and Tempting

I was walking down Market Street a week ago and noticed the sign that said PHAT "Pretty Hot and Tempting".

At first I thought it was referring to the food on offer at the "Desi Chill" but whilst the sign for the former takeaway is still hung on the outside of the building, it is in fact now a ladies only gymnasium, sauna and fitness centre.

It used to be the Cheshire Cheese public house (2007) before it was closed in 2009 after which it first became the Cheshire Grill (2010) and then the Desi Chill (2011)

It isn't the first place in Hyde that has gone from pulling pints to pulling iron.

Market Street Shadows

Tha shadows are falling across the bottom of Market Street as yet another business bites the dust.

Waterways bathroom and tiles showroom has now closed down and the premises are up for rent. On the left is the Donnybrook Medical Centre by the bus station. The shuttered shop on the right was once the surgery of Dr Shipman.

Hyde Hospital Lodge

The Lodge at Hyde Hospital on Grange Road South.

Hyde Hospital was built in 1886 as a "Fever Hospital". By 1929 it was known as Hyde Infectious Diseases Hospital. From 1948-1955 it was known again as Hyde Isolation Hospital. In the late 1980s, wards 1 to 3 were converted into Hyde Nursing Home operated by Meridian Healthcare Ltd. See the Nursing Home on Hyde DP Xtra.

Ward 4, known as the TB ward and some smaller buildings continued to be used by some ancillary service until 1996. They are now being demolished - see my post of 27th November.

I believe the Lodge is used by Meridian as offices.

Ruby Tuesday: Fever ward awaits demolition

Hyde Hospital was built in 1886 as a "Fever Hospital". By 1929 it was known as Hyde Infectious Diseases Hospital. From 1948-1955 it was known again as Hyde Isolation Hospital. In the late 1980s, wards 1 to 3 were demolished to make way for Hyde Nursing Home.

This red-brick building, Ward 4, known to many as the TB ward, continued to be used by some ancillary services until 1996. It is now being demolished.

ABC Wednesday: Q is for Queen Street

At one time Queen Street was a busy thoroughfare that went through Slack Mill to Lumn Road.

Now a school and new houses have been built on the site of the mill so now it only leads to the school gates and the car park for the gymnasium belonging to Ricky (Hitman) Hatton.

Note the 20mph sign on the road.

ABC Wednesday: L is for Long Meadow Car Park

Car park on the site of Long Meadow Mill (demolished 1900). On the left with the tree in front is the Donnybrook Medical Centre. On the right behind the back of shops on Clarendon Street is the Job Centre. In the centre of the background is the now closed Astoria Bingo Hall.

Weekend Reflections: No Mirrors

"No Mirrors, No Lycra, No Men" so it says on the window of the new ladies only fitness and toning salon on Market Street.

I'm not certain, but I think it may be the same business that had recently moved into the former Crown Inn. Now they've re-located into premises on the corner of Edna Street previously occupied by a bathroom showroom.

There may be no mirrors on the inside but the plate-glass frontage acts like a mirror reflecting the buildings opposite.

You can see the whole building on Hyde DP Xtra.

You can see other reflections at Weekend Reflections.

Yellow and Blue

The Powerhouse Gym is located in part of what was originally the Hippodrome Theatre and cinema. Below it is now M G Electrics Extra. The domestic appliance retailer formerly occupied Woodhead House, now Cash Converters, across the road. They moved to premises higher up Market Street some years ago. I presume from the word "Extra" that this is an additional outlet for them. They have moved into the shop previously occupied by "Let's Celebrate" who specialise in party balloons and the like. They have moved into smaller premises next door on the corner of Borough Arcade. Those were previously "Sew & Sews" which offered a seamstress service as well as craft sundries.
