The overgrown turntable at Godley

This is the site of the former railway turntable on the Godley Junction to Apethorn railway line. The "Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC)" route opened in 1866. Here is where trains heading for Fiddler's Ferry power station via Warrington Arpley would exchange locomotives. The whole point of the railway was to carry Yorkshire coal to Lancashire for burning in one way or another. Originally the trains were steam hauled but after electrification of the Woodhead line in the 1950s the class 76 electric locos would draw the train onto the branch and un-couple before running around and departing; subsequently, a diesel loco would appear and hook-on for the remainder of the trip. Freight services over Woodhead ended in 1981 and this line became redundant. The track was removed and over the years nature has been regaining the ground.

Bridge #43 at Godley Hill

This is the bridge under the Manchester to Glossop railway line at Godley Hill. The road under the line led from Station Road past the Kerry Foods factory to Godley Hall - see how it looked in March 2010

Since the building of the new road Kerry Way, access to Godley Hill from Station Road under this bridge (#43 on the Hadfield and Ardwick Junction line) has been blocked off.

Take a walk under the bridge to see the new road, Godley Hill and its War Memorial by following me to Hyde DP Xtra.

Brookfold Farm and Valley

The farm lies between Godley and Hattersley.

Horses graze in the valley between the farm and the railway line from Manchester which is hidden behind the curving line of trees.

New fencing in Vincent Park

Where the footpath in Vincent Park crosses the Godley Brook some new fencing appears to have been erected recently.

Horses on Mottram Road

At the bottom of Godley Hill Road.

On the right hand side is a "data collection camera". According to the speed camera page on the council website "A system of data collection cameras enable traffic engineers to build up speed profiles of the road covered. This enables the Council to identify speed hotspots and take the necessary action. They can also be used to help identify regular speeding offenders. The cameras also contain an overview camera that may be used for general public safety reasons."

Godley Arches and Steps

Yesterday's photograph of the entrance to Godley Reservoir was taken from the bus stop across the road.

Turn round 90 degrees and this is the view we see.

The arches carry the Glossop to Manchester railway line over the A57. Godley station lies to the right and the entrance to the Glossop-bound platform is up the steps behind the fence. The entrance to the Manchester-bound platform is on the other side of the arches.

Weekend in Black & White: Entrance to Godley Reservoir

The entrance to a private access road off the A57 up to Godley Reservoir. The small building is a meter house.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Kerry Way

Kerry Way is a newly constructed road off the A57 Mottram Road to service the Kerry Foods factory. Previously HGVs had to negotiate the narrow Godley Hill Road to access the factory.

See a view of the construction site in March 2013.

Mottram Road near Longlands Lodge

This view down Mottram Road is in the opposite direction to the one posted on 3rd February.

Just down the road on the left is the end of Pudding Lane.

On the right in the woods is Longlands Lodge. At one time there used to be a school in the woods but it has long gone and the whole area is now privately owned.

Longlands Wood

This dense wood, through which flows the Godley Brook, lies on the north side of Mottram Road, Godley opposite the bottom of Viners Way.

An Aerial View

On 11th July 2013 Mike Richardson was on an EasyJet flight from Edinburgh to Luton and whilst over Stockport took a photograph across Audenshaw reservoirs and beyond. The original photograph can be seen on Geograph.

I've cropped and enhanced the portion that highlights Hyde.

Godley reservoir stands out below the M67 (sweeping towards the roundabout at Hattersley and the new Tesco) and above the Manchester to Glossop railway line. Also prominent is the route of the former Godley Junction to Apethorn Railway Line, now TransPennine Trail and National Cycle Network 62.

Easily recognised are Ewen Fields (Hyde FC ground) and Garden Street recreation ground. Others will doubtless pick out other areas.

ABC Wednesday: G is for Godley Junction Station Yard

The original station yard at Godley Junction. The station closed in 1995 but trains on the line from Manchester Piccadilly to Glossop still pass by. This was taken from the side of the former Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC) route to Apethorn Junction through fences and barbed wire that prevent access into the old station.

See how busy it once was on Old Hyde.

Friday Fences: Godley Turntable

This old fence forms the boundary of a former railway turntable on the Godley Junction to Apethorn railway line. The "Cheshire Lines Committee (CLC)" route opened in 1866.

I showed you the end of the line in my post of 9th August 2013.

Green Lane Bridge

The bridge at Green Lane over the former Godley to Apethorn Railway line has two archways. West of Green Lane the line became single-track and has been reclaimed for the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62. The double arch here allows good separation on the trail between cyclists/walkers and horseriders. I showed you the footpath junction, which here is just behind the photographer, in my post of 25th July.

East of Green Lane the footpath continues over Brookfold Lane bridge towards Godley Junction where a steel fence cuts off the electrified railway line from Manchester to Glossop and Hadfield.

There is a magpie on the bridge - take a closer look on Hyde DP Xtra.

Friday Fences: End of the line

The footpath along the line of the former Apethorn to Godley Junction railway line ends here at the fence which blocks entry onto the former junction with the line that now runs from Manchester to Glossop.

See how it looked here in 2010 on Hyde Daily Photo Volume 1.

For the view through the fence, a look back up the track and more details about the railway see Hyde DP Xtra.

A hidden mural in Godley

A colourful piece of graffiti on the side of a brick building that remains near the turntable on the former Godley to Apethorn railway. The building may have been the base for a signal box.

Signs at Green Lane junction

After passing under Green Lane bridge (out of sight on the left), the Trans Pennine Trail leaves the route of the former Apethorn to Godley railway line to follow Green Lane via the path behind the photographer.

The wooden finger post on the right points out the route. See the insets for a closer view of how it looks now and how it looked in 2007 when it showed the distances to Stockport and Broadbottom.

A pair of notices on the left give information about the trail and carry a warning about the use of unauthorised motor vehicles. Similar ones are located at Donald Avenue and you can read what they say on Hyde DP Xtra.

A footpath follows the old railway track to the right for about another mile until it is blocked off just before the junction with the main railway line at Godley. I'll be posting some photographs from along that section at a later date.
