The end of Dowson Road
The junction at the end of Dowson Road where the A627 turns left on to Market Street. Across the junction between M A Neil's carpet shop (originally a Co-op store) and Ricky Hatton's gymnasium is Queen Street. Snow can be seen on the Pennine Hills in the background.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Danger on Dowson Road
This was the pavement on Dowson Road last Friday. Although the main road had been gritted and traffic was flowing, the pavement consisted of slippery slush which would turn into deadly ice once the temperature dropped.

Before the snow arrived
This was taken last Saturday morning by the New Beech Street exit on to Clark Way. The M67 is hidden behind the fencing. It was very cold and the clouds were coming in over the Pennine Hills. A few hours later the snow arrived and covered them white.

Contrails over Talbot Road, Newton
On a bright sunny winter morning there appears to be more traffic in the sky than on the road.

A Yellow New Year
It was raining in the afternoon on New Year's Day. Across Dowson Road at the Shell filling station, petrol and diesel were 3 pence per litre cheaper than a week ago on Christmas Day.

Signs approaching Broomstairs Bridge
A few yards further along Manchester Road from the view posted on Tuesday are these road signs.
Broomstair bridge over the river Tame was originally the boundary between Hyde, Cheshire and Denton, Lancashire. Now both towns are part of Tameside Metropolitan Borough.
Beyond the boundary sign are two warning road signs. One refers to horses which is not surprising as there is a stables on the left hand side and a bridleway on the opposite side of the road.
The other sign warns of cattle!

Manchester Road, Kingston
This is the A57 road that connects Lincoln to Liverpool via Sheffield and Manchester. Here at Kingston it is approaching the Cheshire-Lancashire boundary. Long distance traffic now bypasses this road by using the motorway network but it remains a busy local route.
The cul-de-sac on the right is Hall Street. According to one of my twitter followers this was once known as Scholes Street.
A view down Hall Street is on Hyde DP Xtra.

Shadows at Church View
I first published the view from "Church View" on 3rd May 2009 and later on 31st March 2013 but this time I'm showing a view of the street itself.
The sign under the street name sign reads "Private Road No Parking".

Sign for Hoviley
The street sign for Hoviley.
Hoviley is at the bottom of Commercial Street and used to go past the dye works to Hoviley Brow which led straight into town.
You can see the sign on the left hand side of the photograph I published recently on Hyde DP Xtra.

Bridge #43 at Godley Hill
This is the bridge under the Manchester to Glossop railway line at Godley Hill. The road under the line led from Station Road past the Kerry Foods factory to Godley Hall - see how it looked in March 2010
Since the building of the new road Kerry Way, access to Godley Hill from Station Road under this bridge (#43 on the Hadfield and Ardwick Junction line) has been blocked off.
Take a walk under the bridge to see the new road, Godley Hill and its War Memorial by following me to Hyde DP Xtra.

Weekend in Black & White: Hoviley Brow
Hoviley Brow, now Commercial Street, used to be one of the main roads into Hyde leading from Newton (for Hyde) station. Behind the wall on the right flows Godley Brook alongside what was a dye works and is now "ABC Wax". Ahead the street led to the Market Place. That end of Hoviley Brow has been renamed Clarendon Place. Now it is a dead end for traffic. A footpath leads to John Street and Clark Way whilst a spiral ramp leads to a footbridge over the M67 motorway. On the left there used be rows of terraced houses and shops. Now there is only the motorway. A tunnel known as Cheapside underpass leads into the car park of Morrisons supermarket.
View the opposite direction on Hyde DP Xtra.
See the original photograph on Geograph
View Hoviley Brow as a Sepia Scene in July 2011.
Hoviley Brow as it looked in the 1950s can be seen on Old Hyde.

ABC Wednesday: J is for John Street (Northern remnant)
When the roads on the north side of the centre of Hyde were demolished in the 1970s to make way for the M67 motorway, this small remnant of John Street survived. The four terraced houses at the end lie back-to-back with the former St Andrew's Mission which closed in the 1960s.

Shadows across Woodend Lane
The end of Woodend Lane from the top of Church Brow looking towards St George's Church.
There is just a feint glimpse of the church tower behind the foliage above the top of the houses on the right. The lych gate can be seen between the cars at the top of the photograph.
