Underwater?
Are you wondering where the water is?
It is behind the
upper fence.
This is the tunnel on the track from Gibraltar Row to Thistley Fields that passes under the Apethorn Aqueduct on the Peak Forest Canal.
As you pass through it you are literally
underwater.

Perfect choice for the letter U.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting how one goes under the water to go to the other side.

We have something like that here - it's called the Massey Tunnel and cars go through every day under the Fraser River. It never fails to give me the creeps and I hate it if there's a problem and I have to stop!

In Mobile, Alabama the highway actually goes under the Gulf of Mexico as you drive your car through a tunnel that is underwater.

This is a much more picturesque underwater underpass than what we have here! (The Lincoln and Holland tunnels are purely Utilitarian).
ReplyDeleteIs it what ordinary people call a dam?
ReplyDeleteGreat image!
ReplyDeleteAnd I prefer your kind of "underwater" to the one we are experiencing right now.
UTILITARIAN is a good description. The bricks look very old and worn. Kate, ABC Team
ReplyDeletehello gerald - eileen from bolton here.
ReplyDeletethis brings back lovely childhood memories of playing around this area in our school holidays. the bridge has a brilliant echo as you stand in the middle and shout. you were unlikely to get run over as it is only wide enough for one car and is in a rural area away from traffic. 5o years ago the road led down to a row of terraced houses called gibralter row which were built for mill workers at the nearby mill called gibralter mill which is also long gone. the area as been landscaped over the years and is a beautiful part of hyde that you can walk or cycle round for miles. we used to have pic-nics accumpanied by or favourite drink of "corperation pop" - tap water!
Great piece of architecture. Great photo too :-)
