ABC Wednesday: T is for Tesco

Tesco are building a superstore on land at Hattersley. The land used to be occupied by houses but these were demolished some years when the estate was re-generated.

Another photograph of the construction work can be found on Hyde DP Xtra.

More T posts can be found at ABC Wednesday.

Bus Times

Many bus stops have a board on a pole displaying the times of buses that stop there. This one is at the Market stop opposite Hyde Town Hall serving the 330 route to Stockport. You can use your mobile phone to get a text message telling you the times of the next three buses. It costs 25p. If it was in real-time, taking into consideration delays and cancellations, it might be worthwhile but as far as I know it isn't so you might as well just read the timetable, even if, as some folk will tell you, "it's a work of fiction".

Shadow Shot Sunday: The Light-stick Vendor

A photograph from the switching on the Christmas lights outside the Town Hall.

The lady was selling "bubble-guns" and these "light-sticks" or whatever they are called. The light from her wares were casting her shadow in one direction and the shadow of her barrow in another.

For more shadows visit Hey Harriet.

Skywatch Friday: Sunrise over Hyde

I caught this sunrise about a quarter to eight on Wednesday morning.

Ten minutes later and the sky had changed to its normal dull grey.

Looking down Lumn Road

Looking past the once-closed but now reopened Gardner's Arms towards the former Globe Inn on the corner of Walker Lane. The Globe is being converted (like so many ex-pubs) into apartments.

See the view from Ridling Lane plus a photo from 2006 on Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC Wednesday: S is for Spoon

One Saturday a few weeks ago we were having our tea and toast at the Methodist Church and found this spoon.

So what was the P.S.A. Brotherhood?

To discover something about it see my post on Old Hyde.

Autumn has arrived

After overnight winds the trees on Dowson Road have dropped most of their leaves which are now sticking hard on the wet pavement.

Half a dozen shops on Market Street

A group of shops towards the top end of Market Street.

"Hyde Trophies" has been there for a number of years.

The vacant shop next door was previously a taxi office.

The "Clay Hut" (or is it "Clay Hat"?) is a newly opened halal fast food takeaway (as if there aren't already too many on the Street) in premises previously occupied by glaziers.

The next shop was a locksmith's for many years but now is a dog grooming parlour called "Top Dogz".

The still vacant office next door has been used (I'm given to understand) as a business "address of convenience".

The signwriter's shop has been here for a number of years.

I wonder what businesses will be here in another couple of years.

A changing view

A look across Stockport Road at Hattersley with St Michael and All Angels church at Mottram in Longendale clear in the background.

See how it looked in September 2008.

The church was still visible but little could be seen behind the hoardings apart from the monkey puzzle tree. A new supermarket is being built now on the site and the tree was moved to a new location down the road. See it now on Hyde DP Xtra.

Weekend Reflections: Lights in a phone box

The Christmas lights were turned on in Hyde last night. I went down to see the pre-switch entertainment but didn't stay for the actual switch-on.

The lights here reflected in the glass of the telephone kiosk belong to a stall selling stick-lights.

I'll post a few more photos from last night at a later date.

Meanwhile check out more Weekend Reflections.

Skywatch Friday: Top of the Town Hall

I was waiting for a bus from the stop opposite the Town Hall and decided to zoom in on the top of the cupola.

It wasn't until I download the photograph that I noticed the three birds perched thereon.

Heavy Horse on Hattersley

I was on Underwood Road in Hattersley recently and saw this heavy horse treading the road. I think this is a Clydesdale but more than that I don't know.

ABC Wednesday: R is for the Ruins of Charlotte House Residential Care Home

The ruins of Charlotte House, a care home on Albert Road. It caught fire in the early hours of the 16th December 2010. The home was in the process of being closed down and only a few residents were still living there. They all escaped safely but the building now faces demolition.

I showed you a wider view of this in May and it doesn't look much different now.

For more R posts visit ABC Wednesday.

Clarendon Christmas Grotto

This is the Christmas grotto in Clarendon Mall. I don't think it is quite as interesting as the one in 2008 that featured penguins on a North-pole helter-skelter.

There are a still a couple of penguins left behind but they are round the back facing the Market Hall.

Clarke Memorials in St George's

In the entrance porch to St George's church, are two memorials to Hyde John Clarke and his wife Ann. In a recent BBC documentary in the "Who Do You Think You Are" series he was revealed as the great-great-great-great-grandfather of Sebastian Coe and the illegitimate son of a slave trader.

Above them are the bottoms of the stone steps that lead up the church tower to the bell-ringing chamber.

You can learn more about Hyde John Clarke on Old Hyde and see a closer view of the memorials on Hyde DP Xtra.

Weekend Reflections in the Entrance to John Grundy House

John Grundy House is a block of flats, named after a former mayor of Hyde, next to and above the Clarendon Shopping Mall.

Reflected in the entrance to the flats is the shopping mall car park.

From the top of Great Norbury Street looking through the lych gate to St George's just before 6 p.m. on a Sunday in September.

Herbet Allkin's Tomb

Herbert Allkin was the first minister of St. George's Church. He died in 1849 at the age of 49. He was interred at the East end of the church in a grave which now lies beneath the clergy vestry. Originally this was an altar tomb outwith the walls but when a new vestry was built in 1897, the slabs of the tomb were placed in an upright position and now form part of the vestry walls.

Read more about him on Old Hyde.

Hyde Town Hall has been decorated in readiness for Christmas. I saw the Christmas tree being delivered on Thursday and this is how it looked on Saturday morning.

Weekend reflections at Pole Bank

Pole Bank was the home of the Ashton family, prominent mill-owners. The house is now a private nursing home. The grounds, however are a public open space.

I first published a photo of the pond in May 2008. In early 2010 the pond was dredged as part of renovation work which you can see here and also here.

This photograph was taken last Tuesday. It was raining heavily and I had to shelter under the trees as best I could. Another photograph from a different angle can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

A vintage view can be found on Old Hyde.

The coloured version of this can be seen on Geograph.

Artingstall Optometrist

D.J. Artingstall's opticians (or more precisley, optometrists) is on Clarendon Street. I went to see him yesterday for an examination. I am pleased to say I don't need new glasses and furthermore my glacuoma is under control with the pressure in my left eye down to 19.

Afterwards I decided to photograph his shop front.

I'm due to have my gall-bladder out on December 5th and need to watch my diet in the meantime. I'm still going to be posting spasmodically for a while.

The CDPB theme for November is "Fences". Behind the fence on the left is the Shell filling station on Dowson Road. This side is the footpath from Church View to the top of Gower Road.
