Owl on the roof

Perched next to two chimney pots (a Scullery Pot and a Crown Pot) on the roof of a shop is a stone owl. Such owls have been seen on other roofs in the town, notably the White Lion.

ABC Wednesday: O is for Onward Chambers

Onward is the motto of Hyde Corporation and you'll find the name in various places around the town. Here it is in the doorway of 34 Market Street. In Kelly's 1914 Directory it was listed as being the offices of the Brittanic Assurance Co. Now the building is occupied by "The Taste of India". On one side is Barclays Bank and on the other is a Pound shop.

St George's from the bottom of Church Brow

Looking up at the tower of St George's from the bottom of Church Brow. The path ahead leads to an allotment on the banks of the Gower Hey Brook valley. The church is reached via steps on the left up to Woodend Lane.

The earliest known view of St George's dates from 1840 and be discovered on Old Hyde.

St George's Day on Hyde Market

England flags were flying from the stalls on Hyde Market last Saturday to celebrate St George's Day.

The Ennerdale

The houses in the foreground, still under construction, are called "The Ennerdale". They are the last section of the new housing complex, Moorside Place, that has been built on the site of the former Automasters Engineering Works.

The house in the background over the fence is Pitfield Cottages, built in 1869.

A new road leads round from the canalside past Wilson Brook to these modern properties - see it on Hyde DP Xtra.

Heron Over Yonder

A week last Sunday I took a walk along the Peak Forest Canal and spotted this heron at Over Yonder.

I have to wonder if it is the same heron I saw here two years ago.

Car park gates

These gates close off the upper storeys of the Clarendon Multi-story car park.

The ground floor is pay and display but parking on the first and second floors is free to shoppers from 9.30 am to 6.30 pm. Just make sure you don't overstay and get locked in.
