A Dinosaur in Hyde

On Easter Saturday some dinosaurs visited Hyde and roamed around town. The first arrived on the Civic Square about 10.45am. More came later and by mid-afternoon the place was crowded with people enjoying the market festivities.

I've been posting a daily photo of Hyde now for nine years with only a few days missing. Five years ago I put Hyde Daily Photo Vol. 1 (2006-2011) into archive mode. Now I am putting Vol. 2 into archive mode.

I shall continue to post photos of Hyde on Hyde Xtra but not necessarily every day. That blog was originally started by a spammer who copied many of the City Daily Photo Blogs. After a concerted effort the blog was closed down and I took over the URL in 2009 as a place to post extra photographs. I will still be posting periodically on all my other blogs and uploading photos to the Geograph Britain & Ireland project where you can contact me via my profile page.

Shadows over the College

Trees cast shadows over the Stockport Road, Hyde Campus of Tameside College.

Hyde College on Stockport Road, Gee Cross opened around 1960. It later became part of Tameside College and was closed in the early 2000s. Having been in mothballs for many years the site is now being sold in order to help fund a super college in Ashton-under-Lyne and despite being on Green Belt land a planning application has been made for an estate of 40 houses to be built on the site.

Undertaker's car park under water

After heavy rain the car parking space for the undertakers on the corner of Market Street and Dowson Road is inundated by a huge puddle.

The reflection on the right is of the back of a house on Thornley Street, while the trees on the left are on Dowson Road.

Behind the rear of the library building in Hyde as featured in last Tuesday's post, a Manchester bound plane flies by as a flue-pipe releases a plume of smoke or hot air up into the clouds.

Spice is nice

The side of the herbs and spices kiosk is splattered with signs advertising all sorts of stuff. I'm not sure what some of the things actually are but the stall has being going for over 21 years so it is obviously doing a lot of people some good.

I took this reflective shot in the window of the Cotton Bale public house when it was closed for refurbishment a few weeks ago.

Library Car Park on Union Street

This car park, viewed from the end of Ward Street, is on the site of the former Hyde Baths which opened in 1889 and closed in 1984 and was later demolished. On the left is the former Hyde Library with buildings at the rear which have been variously used as a college and for council services. Library services have now been moved to the Town Hall which is visible beyond the corner of the car park.

Craig's Welsh Meat and Cheeses

A visitor to Hyde Market on Saturday was the "Meat Man" selling "Craig's Quality Meats" from his lorry. A separate stall was devoted to Craig's Farmhouse Cheeses.

Despite the stormy weather I hope he did well enough to come back again.

Shadow Shot Sunday: A560 Gateway shadows

Entering Hyde along the A560 from Stockport are some huge raised metal signs which were erected at boundaries all around the Greater Manchester area at the time of the millennium. When the sun is strong in the evening their shadows are cast across the road.

Partial Solar Eclipse over Gee Cross

I didn't have the equipment nor the inclination to get any especially clear photos of last week's partial solar eclipse but I made a few attempts to document the occasion.

This image was taken around 9.10 am when the moon was just beginning to take a bite out of the sun.

ABC Wednesday: K is for Knott Lane

Knott Lane is ancient route connecting Gee Cross with Knott Fold.

In modern times the Cheetham Fold estate has been built around it, including The Apethorn public house.

Despite being a popular local pub and a music venue, it was closed in January 2015 by its then owners, Enterprise Inns, and has been sold over the head of the pub manager.

Trans Pennine Trail near Foxholes

The route of the former Godley Junction to Apethorn railway is now used for the Trans Pennine Trail and National Cycle Route #62. In the foreground is a Rowe type Sustrans milepost. See the front of the milepost in my post of 27th November 2014.

Eclipse shadows

Others have posted photos of last Friday's solar eclipse so you don't need more from me. During the eclipse the sun itself still shone fairly brilliantly in a cloudy sky and despite around 90% of it being covered by the shadow of the moon it was still strong enough to cast these shadows across the car park.

I was passing the lawnmower and cycle shop on Market Street when I noticed the cat looking out of the window.

Final end of Carrfield Mill

Compare this with the photograph I took in February 2013.

Two years on and the offices of Welspun at Carrfield Mill have finally been demolished and I took this new photo after poking my phone-camera through the fence.

Now that it has all gone a 7 acre industrial and office development site is up for sale.

See how it looked when the Ashton Brothers' mill complex, Carrfield Mill, Bayleyfield Mill and Balaclava Mill, was extant on Old Hyde.

Car Park Charges on Chapel Street

This is a composite photograph featuring two seperate signs.

On Chapel Street, either side of Oldham Street, are two car parks.

One is owned and run by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council. The charges that apply between 8 am and midnight Mon-Sat including bank holidays are:up to 30 minutes - 50p (8am - 6pm)
up to 3 hours - £1 (8am - 6pm)
All Day - £2 (8am - midnight)
Evenings - £1 (6pm - midnight)
No charge on Sundays
Blue-badge holders are allowed an extra hour free on top of the paid-for time.
The other is owned by private company Simple Intelligent Parking and their tarrifs which apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including bank holidays are:1hr 70p
2hrs £1.40
3hrs £2.10
4hrs £2.70
12hrs £3.20
24hrs £4.00

Looking down on the Peak Forest Canal

The Peak Forest Canal, viewed here from the Manchester Road bridge, was built at the turn of the 18th/19th centuries. On the right are 19th century warehouses. On the left are 21st century houses built on the site of the former Automasters Enginering Works.

Near the bus stop by the flower planter and between the phone box and a bench a busker is playing on the Civic Square. He has come fully equipped with music stand microphone and speakers. In the background the Town Hall on the right is covered with scaffold. On the left is the RBS bank.
