ABC Wednesday: U is for the United Church on Union Street

A Congregational church was established on Union Street in 1824 and rebuilt in 1843. Since then it has amalgamated with Chapel Street Baptist church and become "The United Church".

During the week it lets out its carpark to commuters.

Compare with the view in September 2009

  2. I grew up in the United Church of Canada which was a mix of Methodist, Congregational, Presbyterian, and Evangelical Brethren churches. Currently, it's the largest Protestant church in the country. I love the brick building for this United Church...ours are usually made of wood.

  3. A nice church. I can think of one United church here that also does the same, letting commuters have the use of the lot during the week. Brings in some extra funds for the congregation that way.

  4. A nice, unassuming building and sign.

  5. It looks a peaceful corner of Hyde. When our Congregational church amalgamated they moved and knocked the church down to make some rather dull looking housing which was a shame because the church building was made of a beautiful white limestone.

  6. Love the brick and so glad it hasn't been torn down to make room for a car park...

  9. And a rather utilitarian look to the church for another U.
