ABC Wednesday: P is for Plymouth Savoy

Another of the American cars on show at the classic car rally held recently at Ewen Fields in aid of SSAFA, a charity that provides practical support and assistance to servicemen and women, veterans and their families.

The 1958 Plymouth Savoy was imported from California in 1992. It has a standard V8 engine as in the Fury. This was a cheap second car for the wife with no radio and power steering.

A contribution to ABC Wednesday.

  5. I had a little 1951 Plymouth in college. It was a "classic" but a small coup, and I love it.

  6. Plymouth was Chrysler's volume line and price leader. Competing against Chevrolet and Ford for what was the entry level market, in most years Plymouth ranked #3 behind Ford and Chevrolet in total sales. Until 1959, Chrysler had its pricier makes - Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge also sell Plymouth. This gave Plymouth a wide network of dealers through which to sell its cars and it gave the dealers a low priced make for volume while the pricier cars gave them a better margin of profit. In 1959, Chrysler abandoned this strategy and Plymouth began to slide. Worse, Chrysler allowed Dodge to bring out a line of cars that competed directly with Plymouth. The result was that Dodge's cheaper car cannibalized sales both from Plymouth and from Dodge's more expensive and better-equipped cars. While it took years to happen, in effect, Chrysler killed Plymouth with both of these moves.

That '58 still looks good to «Louis». The styling was part of Chrysler styling chief Virgil Exner's "Forward Look" for 1957-1958.
