Clarendon Square Car Park

Off Union Street lies the Clarendon Square Car Park.

See how it looked in September 2006.

Until about a year ago parking on the upper levels of the multi-storey car park was free but the council has since stopped that "perk" and now you have to "pay and display" to park anywhere. As a result hardly anyone bothers to venture above ground and rumours are that it is going to be pulled down.

ABC Wednesday: J is for Johnsonbrook Road

Johnsonbrook Road leads from Hyde North railway station up to its junction here with Ashton Road and Birch Lane.

Once a hive of heavy industry it is now for the most part a rough cobbled road apart from this end.

The new houses are over the boundary in Dukinfield.

Festival of the Equinox

The equinox marks the passage of time and the changing of the seasons. In this material day and age it affects not just the natural world but the commerical one too.

Here in Clarendon Shopping Centre, where a travel agents has closed and moved on, a new business is moving in. I could be mistaken, but it appears to be a new clothing store despite similar stores having failed before.

Hopefully this one will grow and blossom past spring and summer and into autumn.

Mellow Yellow Monday: Lollipop Lady

Officially known as school crossing patrollers, lollipop men and ladies as they are more popularly called, are a common sight in the UK.

Under UK law it is an offence for a motorist not to stop if signalled to do so by a patroller. In the past patrollers only had the authority to stop the traffic for children. However, the Transport Act 2000 changed the law so that a patroller had the authority to stop the traffic for any pedestrian.

Shadow Shot Sunday: Memorial Garden for Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes

Last September I showed you the double rainbow that appeared over Hyde on the evening of the day that PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone were gunned down in Mottram.

I showed you also the tributes to Fiona and Nicola that were laid at the scene.

Today's photo shows the memorial garden which was opened outside Hyde Police Station on 13th December 2012.

Friday Fences: Godley Hill War Memorial

The War Memorial at Godley Hill, unveiled in 1920, is a small obelisk made of granite in the centre of a circular flower bed. The area is surrounded by a low wall. Access is through small metal gates, both of which bear the date 1953 (possibly because they were placed there for the Coronation of Elizabeth II). In front of the memorial, on the flower bed, is a cube-shaped white receptacle for holding flowers bearing the words "In memory of the fallen of Godley Hill"

The inscription on the front side of Godley Hill War Memorial ] reads

Erected
in honour
and deep gratitude
to the men who fought
for
liberty and freedom
in the
Great World War
1914-1919.
