A peek through the trees on Newton Street at the site of the former Carrfield Mill complex which has been completely demolished now.

In the centre is one of the mill ponds that supplied water and acted as a reservoir to be used in the case of fire.

Signs at the entrance to ABC Wax

Yesterday I posted a photo of Godley Brook looking upstream from the entrance to the former dyeworks at Hoviley.

Today's post is of the signs at the entrance to ABC Wax.

Ashton Brothers built Newton Bank Printworks in Hyde in the early 1800s. In 1899 F.W.Ashton became part of the Calico Printers association (CPA). In 1908 the first wax prints (production Batiks using handblock) were produced. In 1959, CPA purchased the Swiss trading company A.Brunnschweiler, and in 1970 that became the company name replacing F.W.Ashton.

A.Brunnschweiler & Co was soon abbreviated to ABC which later became the brand name of its wax prints in West Africa. ABC was purchased by the Cha group in 1992. In 2005, production of the standard ABC product was transferred to another group factory in Ghana called Akosombo Textiles Ltd (ATL)

All production ceased at Newton bank printworks in December 2007 and all the necessary machinery was transferred to ATL in Ghana. The site was then decommissioned and cleaned up prior to demolition which began in 2014.

Sleet on the Street

Outside Wendy's Hair and the British Red Cross charity shop by the bus stop on Market Street a short sharp shower of sleet has made the pavement very slippery.

The Strawberry-Beret Dress Agency run by Sue Jones, started out as an online business buying and selling pre-loved clothing. Now it is also operating from two units at Hyde Indoor Market.

I saw this half-pint beer glass standing on a window-sill at the side of the Bike 'n' Hound public house late one Saturday morning. It had probably been there since Friday night.

The former furniture showroom on Russell Street is no longer Byles of Hyde as the firm has moved to new premises and are now Byles of Marple.

ABC Wednesday: F is for the Flower shop

On Monday I showed you the Pre Loved Baby Goods shop that has opened up next the Tameside Animal Shelter fundraising shop on Reynold Street.

Yesterday I showed you the Conservative Club on the other side.

At the corner of Reynold Street and Market Street is the Flower Shop which at one time used to be a fishmongers.

On the gable end is a frieze of which you can see a closer view on Hyde DP Xtra.

Hyde Conservative Club

Yesterday I showed you the Pre Loved Baby Goods shop that has opened up next the Tameside Animal Shelter fundraising shop on Reynold Street.

One the other side is the three-storey Conservative Club. I haven't so far been able to discover anything about the history of this building.

A new second hand store has opened next door to the Tameside Animal Shelter charity shop on Reynold Street.

St George's at sunset

In the foreground is part of St George's C of E Primary School.

Prior to 1831, the Church of England had no place of worship in the township, and for ecclesiastical purposes Hyde was connected with the Parish Church of Stockport, which place many of the inhabitants attended. Others worshipped at Mottram, or at Denton Old Church.

The construction of the church began in 1831 and it was consecrated the following year. St. George's was first formed into an ecclesiastical parish in 1843.

Skywatch Friday: Some roofs on Market Street

On the left is moza, a curry/kebab takeaway next to which is Cat's Cake Emporium and The Old Bakehouse Bistro.

On the right are the offices of two estate agents "Taylor & Wood" and "Reeds Rains".

Fuel prices at Morrisons

In January 2007 The price of fuel at Morrisons on Mottram Road was 85.9 pence per litre for Unleaded petrol. City Diesel was 89.9 ppl and Auto gas 35.9 ppl.

By December 2007 it was 100.9 pence per litre for Unleaded petrol. City Diesel is 105.9 ppl and Auto gas 45.9 ppl.

Since then it has risen to around a third as much again but now it has fallen and the price is currently 103.9 pence per litre for Unleaded petrol. City Diesel is 109.9 ppl and Auto gas 56.9 ppl.

ABC Wednesday: E is for Eating

E is for Eating

When I posted a photograph of the Clarendon Café in September 2010 it was still owned by a Greek couple who had run it for a number of years.

The place has changed ownership at least a couple of time since then and was recently closed, but has now re-opened under the name "Bake 'n' Butty". It is open from 7.30 am until early afternoon most days. The inside has been completely turned round and seems less cramped than it did previously.

The end of Dowson Road

The junction at the end of Dowson Road where the A627 turns left on to Market Street. Across the junction between M A Neil's carpet shop (originally a Co-op store) and Ricky Hatton's gymnasium is Queen Street. Snow can be seen on the Pennine Hills in the background.

New platform at Hyde Central Station

The last time I showed a photo of Hyde Central Station there was nowhere to sit.

Now that the work on platform 1 has been completed the three chairs out in the open and the small shelter are available again.

ABC Wednesday: D is for Danger on Dowson Road

This was the pavement on Dowson Road last Friday. Although the main road had been gritted and traffic was flowing, the pavement consisted of slippery slush which would turn into deadly ice once the temperature dropped.

Church Brow Gardens

When I posted a photograph of this valley through which flows the Gower Hey Brook in January 2014 the bottom was flooded to quite a height.

When I walked by a couple of weeks ago the brook was barely a trickle.

Many years ago the bank below St George's Church was lined with allotments and gardens. Now only one allotment remains. Due to a combination of storms, vandalism and some neglect everything is gradually slipping down the valley side.
