Sleet on the Street
Outside Wendy's Hair and the British Red Cross charity shop by the bus stop on Market Street a short sharp shower of sleet has made the pavement very slippery.

Hyde Conservative Club
Yesterday I showed you the Pre Loved Baby Goods shop that has opened up next the Tameside Animal Shelter fundraising shop on Reynold Street.
One the other side is the three-storey Conservative Club. I haven't so far been able to discover anything about the history of this building.
See how it looked in 2006 on Hyde Daily Photo Vol. 1.

The Embarrassment of Mottram Christmas Tree
The Christmas tree on the Market Place at Mottram in Longdendale was branded the worst in Britain when it was planted by Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council. Villager Emma Purcell created the Facebrook Group The Embarrassment of Mottram Christmas Tree as a place for members past and present of Mottram community to air their anger and views about the size and quality of the Christmas Tree, believing they deserved bigger and better! However once the anger had dissipated, "Twiggy", as it has come to be known, has kindled much community spirit.
A charity night was organised with entertainment in the nearby White Hart and carol singing on the Market Place raising money for Reuben's Retreat.
The Crown Pole in the background was originally erected in 1760 to commemorate the coronation of George III.
The village stocks in the foreground were moved here in the 1960s having been discovered during the building of the Hattersley estate.
Another view of the tree can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Liberace's Gold Cadillac JAZZ 1
This was one of the vehicles on show at the classic car rally held recently at Ewen Fields in aid of SSAFA a charity that provides practical support and assistance to servicemen and women, veterans and their families.
The 1931 Cadillac Fleetwood Drop Head Coupé features 23.75ct gold leaf-clad bodywork, silver external door handles and 24ct gold-plated internal door handles. These embellishments were added during a lavish, three-year project carried out in the 1970s by the then-owner, Jack Smith of Kansas, USA. The gold leaf coachwork is offset by white leather upholstery. The gear lever top used to be gem-studded platinum. Under the bonnet is a 5.7-litre V8 engine, mated to a three-speed manual transmission.
According to a news report in The Telegraph it failed to attract a buyer when put up for auction in September 2013. It now appears to belong to "Mike & Shaun's classics".
Two more photographs can be found on Hyde DP Xtra.

Red Bedford 764 XUT
This 1946 Bedford KU was first registered in Midlothian, Scotland working from a woodyard. It broke down in Manchester in 1972 and sat in Walkers breakers yard in Droylsden until 1986. It was in pieces when bought in the late 90s by A. Houghton and wasn't finally restored until 2010.
It was one of the vehicles on show at the classic car rally held recently at Ewen Fields in aid of SSAFA, a charity that provides practical support and assistance to servicemen and women, veterans and their families.

ABC Wednesday: I is for Ice Bucket Challenge
Looking out last Saturday from the entrance to Clarendon Square Shopping Centre past the "key-cutting" stall towards Corporation Street with the RBS bank on one corner and the Town Hall on the other. The stall is advertising an "Ice Bucket Challenge" event taking place later that morning involving some of the traders from the Indoor Market. By 12 noon it was pouring down with rain so everyone was wet anyway. I wasn't able to stay and watch it but I have seen the video on Facebook.

Blood Bikes Manchester
Blood Bikes Manchester were fund-raising on Hyde Civic Square last Saturday.
Blood Bikes Manchester is a registered charity, which offers an out of hours and free of charge urgent medical courier service to the NHS. They volunteer to play their part in saving peoples lives and save the NHS money that would otherwise be wasted on taxis or expensive couriers, but more than anything else they do it because they love it. More information on the Blood Bikes website.

Gee Cross Fete 2014
Although it was a very cloudy day and muggy it didn't actually rain at yesterday's Fete which was the 21st birthday of this annual event organised by the local Rotary Club which raises money for the Willow Wood Hospice. This view across Sam Redfern Green gives a bit of an overview.
I've posted 17 photos from the fete on Gee Cross Fete 2014 which also has links to photographs from earlier events.

Lifeboats and ice cream
A week last Saturday was a hot day on Hyde Civic Square.
Behind the charity stall for the RNLI is Madge's ice-cream van (established 1897). That business is about as old the children's carousel glimpsed on the right.
In the background are bookies William Hill and the Santander Bank (a former Abbey bank and the only Santander in town now the former Bradford & Bingley has been closed).

ABC Wednesday: D is for Debra
Of all the many charity shops in Hyde, the Debra shop in Clarendon Mall is one of the most spacious. We pop in most times we are passing and enjoy chatting with their friendly staff.
Debra is the national charity working on behalf of people in the UK with the genetic skin blistering condition Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB). It has over 100 shops across the UK.
