New Vets in Reynard Street

There's a new vet in town. The Tameside Veterinary Clinic has moved into these premises on Reynard Street that were formerly solicitors' offices.

I can't tell you much about them as we no longer have a pet. It is more than ten years since Penny took her last walk to the vets. Bob Butler retired several months ago and his surgery at the cutting edge of town has now closed.

It seems that the Tameside Veterinary Clinic opened in Waterloo, Ashton in 2000 and have now expanded into Hyde - see their website.

The man on the spiral footbridge

Weekend Reflections: No Mirrors

"No Mirrors, No Lycra, No Men" so it says on the window of the new ladies only fitness and toning salon on Market Street.

I'm not certain, but I think it may be the same business that had recently moved into the former Crown Inn. Now they've re-located into premises on the corner of Edna Street previously occupied by a bathroom showroom.

There may be no mirrors on the inside but the plate-glass frontage acts like a mirror reflecting the buildings opposite.

The Leafy Foxholes Oak

This ancient oak tree at Foxholes, just below Knott Fold, overlooks the former Godley to Apethorn Railway line now used by the Trans Pennine trail.

Sign for the Buxton Inn

The Buxton Inn was closed a little while ago but appears now to be "Under new management". The advertised opening hours when I walked past just over a week ago were "Sundays 11pm - 12am; Friday & Saturday 11pm - 1am" unless I misread them.

In 2007 it included a Thai restaurant.

In 2002 before it had expanded into the adjacent property we had celebrated our wedding anniversary therein.

Adamson Band at Gee Cross Well Dressing 2012

At the weekend I posted a view of the Adamson Band reflected near the Village Green Well and closer view of a reflection in an instrument.

Here the band have marched down Joel Lane and are turning into Stockport Road.

Last Sunday saw the Adamson Band leading the procession around the now seven wells that are visited as part of the Gee Cross Well Dressing ceremony.

Shell open again

After its extensive refurbishment, the Shell filling station on Dowson Road is open again.

I noticed that unleaded petrol is priced at 128.9 ppl and diesel at 131.9 ppl which makes the former a penny dearer and the latter a penny cheaper than the price at Morrisons.

Signs at the end of Wavereley Road

At the end of Waverley Road there is a "Give Way" sign. Dowson Road is marked with the word "Slow" just before the "Double Bend" sign. A notice on the Give Way sign warns dog owners that fouling carries a fine of up to £1000. The signs are manufactured by the Altrincham firm "Forest City".

ABC Wednesday: A is for Arnold Hill Well

Arnold Hill Well is first stop on the annual Gee Cross Well Dressing Procession.

Although well-dressing is a custom mostly confined to Derbyshire, it can be seen in adjacent counties too. Well dressing celebrations were held regularly in Gee Cross from the 1820s until 1878. The custom was revived by the local Women's Institute in 2000.

Arnold Hill Well was dressed by the children of Holy Trinity School. The children looked at inspiring people and stories from the history of the Olympic Games. They have been reflecting on Olympic values such as respect, excellence, friendship, courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

A planter planted

As work on the renewal of Hyde Market continues, a "planter" has now been planted in front of the red telephone box on the corner of Market Street and Clarendon Street.

As I was taking this photograph a passer-by remarked that it looked like a giant ashtray.

I'm not sure where the red bricks on the pallet are destined to go.

Blue stands at Ewen Fields

Ewen Fields is the home of Hyde FC and Manchester City Reserves (or rather The Manchester City Elite Development Squad as they are now known). It used to be red but now it is blue.

Skyview Friday: Pigeon over the Town Hall

I took a photo of the market last week and it wasn't till I downloaded it that I noticed the pigeon flying over the Town Hall.

It is carrying something in its beak but I can't decide what. As I was using my phone-camera this is the best close-up I can get.

The carousel keeps on turning

As I posted last Sunday the roundabout was stopped for a time as the new flags had raised the ground and prevented it turning.

But all is now well. As the sign says "This roundabout was manufactured by Halsteads of Sowerby Bridge in 1897", and you don't stop the old girl for very long. The fare today is 50p. 100 years ago it was probably a ha'penny.

The Blue Window Club

The building at the corner of Lumn Road and Smithy Lane was known as the Blue Window Club. Its official name was the Werneth Unionist Working Men's Club. It closed in the late 1980s but re-opened briefly in the 1990s as the "Irish Club". It has since been converted into residential use.

The site of the original smithy is now a carpark for the Ring o' Bells pub which is around the far corner. In the centre of the roundabout at the end is the clock from the now demolished James North factory.

A weed is just a flower in the wrong place

There is fine show of yellow flowers around the fence at the caravan storage area on Reynard Street. Were they planted or did they just grow? I don't know.

I'm reliably informed that the yellow flowers are Senecio Brachyglottis- greyi, a kind of New Zealand aster. They have very similar flowers to Ragwort but the foliage is quite different.

Shadows across the market ground

Sun on the last Saturday of June meant many shadows fell across the market ground where the new stalls were being erected.

One slight problem; the stone flags around the children's roundabout had raised the ground so much that it couldn't operate.

However, I am pleased to report the problem has since been solved and the carousel is turning again.

Muddy steps into Gower Hey Woods

These muddy steps lead down from the TransPennine Trail into Gower Hey Woods. Normally duckboards provide a safe passage across the swampy ground at the bottom.

This photograph was taken a few weeks ago after a lot of heavy rain. The brook was obviously flowing too fast for the culvert and a small lake covered the duckboards.

Since then we've had a great deal more rain and it is still falling so I imagine the water will have crept a lot higher since then but I won't be venturing down to take a look.

Skywatch Friday: Hattersley Monkey Puzzle Tree

The Hattersley Monkey Puzzle tree was planted in 1968 by Barry Tongue in the back garden of his house on Garnett Road. The house along with others in the area were demolished as part of the Hattersley redevelopment plan. By then the tree had become a local landmark and a preservation order was placed on it in 2007.

In 2010 planning permission was granted for Tesco to build a supermarket on the site and the tree was moved to Mill Hill Green on the other side of Ashworth Lane.

Since being moved two years ago the grass has grown around its base, but it still requires support. The houses in the background are on Green Way.

Signs on Dowson Road

The Leading Edge hair and beauty salon is offering "Prom Packages"; the "Hot Crumpet" sandwich shop is open. There's a no parking sign, a sign for the "Simply Chinese" takeaway. On the other side of the road one house is "To Let" and another is "For Sale". The 330 bus to Stockport displays an electronic sign.

A New Yellow Canopy

Work on the refurbishment of the Shell filling station on Dowson Road continues apace.
