A Fire Engine Squeezes Through

Sometimes cars park outside and across from the Jolly Carter - often thinking it won't take long to nip to the cash point at Lloyds bank.

It is a good job this fire engine wasn't in a hurry when it had to squeeze its way through the other week.

The traffic wardens of course were busy in a quieter street.

Bridge with attached pipeline

The view is looking West on the TransPennine Trail that is the new use for the line of the former Godley to Apethorn railway.

This is not the bridge that links Peel Street with Mansfield Road, as I thought when I first posted this, but the Stockport Road bridge. Thanks to Dave Williams for correcting me.

What, you may ask, is carried in that pipeline supported by the bridge? Well I don't know. I do know that there are various other pipeline bridges across railways and streams and doubtless they link up with each other somewhere.

Weekend Reflections: Adamson's Wharf

We haven't had any decent sunny weather since the heatwave early last month so here is another photograph from my walk along the Peak Forest Canal.

This was taken from just below the sunken boat I posted a few weeks ago.

This old boat was been moored at the Adamson Wharf for a long time.

St George's East End

From the East the tower is hidden from view.

Croft Street West of Railway Street

A dozen and a half almost identical looking houses on the south side of Croft Street between Railway Street and the bridge over the railway.

It would appear that the same builder has renovated the whole terrace in recent years having bought a job lot of porches.

Looking Down Cheetham Fold Road

Taken about a month ago during the brief warm sunny spell before the weather turned back to wintry again.

Skywatch Friday: Godley Hall Inn

A Grade II listed building dating from 1718. It stands on the site of an earlier Manor House at Godley Hill.

Cheshire Cheese now Desi Chill

It used to be the Cheshire Cheese and then it became the Cheshire Grill but now it is Desi Chill.

ABC Wednesday: R is for Rutherford Close

Rutherford Close off Railway Street is an estate of modern houses built on a former railway goods yard.

The Manchester Piccadilly to Rose Hill (Marple) railway line still runs at the back of the houses.

In the background, beyond the railway, can be seen one of the warehouses that is part of the Adamson Industrial Estate. The one in view is dated 1898 but others are older and on the other side the warehouses overlook the Peak Forest Canal.

Rutherford Close is named after local artist Harry Rutherford.

Parsonage Street Clinc

Built in the 1920s as a Child Welfare Centre and known as Parsonage Street clinic. It specialised in post-operative physiotherapy with patients referred for treatment via their GPs. It is now known as Hyde Physiotherapy Centre and treats private as well as NHS patients.

201 Monochrome

Another monochrome Tenin-esque photo. Compare it with the one I posted in August 2010 and the only main difference is that the M&M discount store has been closed down.

The Chapman Arms

A modern built public house on the corner of Stockport Road and Chapman Road, Hattersley.

According to Daves History of Hattersley

In 1858 the Manor House was sold to John Chapman, Member of Parliament for Grimsby. A local farm-house was turned into a pub and became the Chapman Arms in his honour. It was demolished and replaced in 1967.

and according to Wikipedia

Chapman died at his house at Hill End in Mottram where he was also lord of the manor of Hattersley and as such always supported the residents of the area including presenting them with a free library.

and that's all I know.

ABC Wednesday: Q is for Queen Adelaide's Tapestry

"The Highland Shepherdess" is one of nine pieces of needlework worked by Queen Adelaide herself and donated to a bazaar held in 1835 to raise funds for a school in Hyde. It was purchased by a member of the Tinker family and passed down through the family into the possession of Margaret (Peggy) Tinker. She has generously passed this artefact into the custody of St George's Church.

The church hope to have it restored in due course.

Queen Adelaide was born in 1792. She married William, Duke of Clarence in 1818. He reigned as King William IV from 1830 until 1837. Queen Adelaide died in 1849.

Charlotte House

The remains of Charlotte House, a care home on Albert Road. It caught fire in the early hours of the 16th December 2010. The home was in the process of being closed down and only a few residents were still living there. They all escaped safely but the building now faces demolition.

Royal Wedding Bunting

The Royal Wedding may have come and gone but the bunting is still flying outside the Jolly Carter.

Alongside Knott Fold Bridge

A monochrome look along Knott Fold Bridge over the TransPennine Trail which follows the route of the former Godley to Apethorn railway line.

Weekend Reflections: Sunken Boat? Surely Not!

Another photograph from my canalside walk last month.

To make it more interesting, I've cropped the photograph to concentrate on the reflection, flipped it upside down and then applied some sepia toning.

Technical School and Library

Hyde Technical School and Free Library opened in 1897 replacing the former Mechanics Institute.

In recent years the building was shared between the library and Tameside College but the college has moved out and the library has been extensively refurbished.

Estate Agents on Market Street

Although one estate agents office on Market Street has closed down, their premises now occupied by Inspired Jewellery , there are several more still in business.

Here are two next door to each other above Chapel Street.

ABC Wednesday: P is for Pretty Pussy & Pansies

It's that cat again; the one I showed you under K for Kitty, this time posing under a tub of pansies in the Market Place.

This was taken two or three weeks ago. I was given to understand that it was one of pair that lived in the back of the M&M discount store in Clarendon Place. Since then the store has been closed (seemingly shut out by the landlord for defaulting on the lease or something).

I've seen one of the cats since and it was looking a bit on the thin side but still wandering around the market place.

Marsh in Gower Hey Wood

It might look like a forest clearing but in reality this is marshland near the flat bridge I showed a few weeks ago.

Roof of Talbot House

This is the roof of Talbot House on Great Norbury Street.

I took this close-up of the roof hoping to get a better view of the carved stonework but actually the spiked lightning conductor seems to be the most interesting aspect.

Mailbox & Shadow

The CDPB theme for Mayday is Mailbox. This replicates the them for 1st April 2007 and so here is the same double post-box in Hyde Market Place as I showed you then.

This time I've captured it on a sunny day with shadows including one of a lady who was approaching to post a letter.
