I like the post boxes in the UK - iron, stylish and red. In the US, they are a less attention grabbing blue, efficiently styled. But devoid of character... this red beauty is great!

ReplyDeleteThank God there is Royal Mail! I've bought postcards and stamps in my last London vacation. But I haven't knew that the stamps were from a private post. So I've dropped my post into this well-known red mailbox. But the addressees nevertheless got their post. Thank you "Royal Mail"!

Pillar boxes were introduced into Britain (starting in Jersey) in 1852 at the instigation of the novelist Anthony Trollope, who was employed at the time by the Post Office as a Surveyors Clerk - although the idea had first been suggested by Rowland Hill in 1840.

ReplyDeleteI notice most mailboxes are either red or yellow, do you know why?
ReplyDeleteThe paint is looking a bit faded on this one, so it must get a fair bit of sun on it all the time.
ReplyDeleteThe first pillar boxes were apparently green, but the colour red was later used as an aid to visibility (which is why most fire engines are red). Presumably yellow is used in some places for the same reason. At one time GPO telephone vans were dark green and it was suspected that this was the the reason they were involved in a relatively high number of accidents. A survey was carried out which determined that the safest colour for a road vehicle was yellow, which resulted in the fleet of GPO vans being re-painted that colour.
