The view is looking West on the TransPennine Trail that is the new use for the line of the former Godley to Apethorn railway.
This is not the bridge that links Peel Street with Mansfield Road, as I thought when I first posted this, but the Stockport Road bridge. Thanks to Dave Williams for correcting me.
What, you may ask, is carried in that pipeline supported by the bridge? Well I don't know. I do know that there are various other pipeline bridges across railways and streams and doubtless they link up with each other somewhere.

ReplyDeleteI think this is the bridge which carries Stockport Road over the old railway line, Gerald. The path coming down from the start of, and running parallel to, Osborne Road meets the path on the old railway line just as it goes round to the left and disappears in your photo. The bridge linking Peel Street with Mansfield Road is the next one along as you go toward Godley, and doesn't have the retaining walls on either side of the bridge that are seen in your photo. I would imagine that the pipeline is a drain going down eventually to the sewage works at the top of Mill Lane.

ReplyDeleteI often have trouble identifying the different bridges when I walk along the old railway line, and usually end up checking on Google Earth when I get home. I wonder if the pipeline goes to the old pumping station at the top of Lumn Road which you featured earlier this year?
