The Weekend in Black & White: Flannagan's Conversion.

Flannagans of Hyde on the corner of Mottram Road and John Shepley Street started out in the 1860s as the Moulders Arms.

A couple of weeks ago I noticed that it had had all its signage removed. There was a board outside advertising a "Spiritualist" meeting and I thought the pub was being converted into a church.

The conversion is now complete - see what it looks like now on Hyde DP Xtra.

Fences on Ashworth Lane

Ashworth Lane, the B6174 from Hattersley to Mottram in Longdendale, just after the grass verges have been cut.

It is a busy little road used by the #201 bus from Manchester which turns left by the pedestrian crossing into John Kennedy Road.

It is also used as a "rat-run" by traffic trying to avoid the queues on the A57.

Soon it will be even busier due to the Tesco superstore that is under construction close by.

The low wooden fences are there to prevent traffic straying on to the verges.

See the grass-cutters on Hyde DP Xtra.

Brighton Bank

A Victorian terrace on Mottram Road opposite the end of Halton Street.

It looks as though Brighton Bank was originally a group of four houses but the end house has been demolished.

Unlike the earlier terraced housing across the road these are set back from the road and have front gardens.

They were built by I. & E.F. in 1876 as given on the name/date plaque which can be viewed on Hyde DP Xtra.

ABC Wednesday: X at the Sportsman Inn

The Sportsman Inn is a "real ale" pub but features here today as a contribution for the letter X at ABC Wednesday.

Firstly because of the X on the top of the roof whose purpose I presume is to act as a lightning conductor.

For another X pertaining to the Sportsman see Hyde DP Xtra.

Tesco takes over Hattersley

Roadworks on Stockport Road, Hattersley as work takes place to construct a Tesco Extra supermarket.

More photographs can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

I think those traffic cones are red; they may be orange - I can't tell the difference.

Yellow and Blue

The Powerhouse Gym is located in part of what was originally the Hippodrome Theatre and cinema. Below it is now M G Electrics Extra. The domestic appliance retailer formerly occupied Woodhead House, now Cash Converters, across the road. They moved to premises higher up Market Street some years ago. I presume from the word "Extra" that this is an additional outlet for them. They have moved into the shop previously occupied by "Let's Celebrate" who specialise in party balloons and the like. They have moved into smaller premises next door on the corner of Borough Arcade. Those were previously "Sew & Sews" which offered a seamstress service as well as craft sundries.

Do I have to walk through the water?

After all the recent rain there is a huge puddle under the Dowson Road bridge over the TransPennine Trail.

I passed by a woman walking her dogs and when I turned round I saw the youngest dog looking up at its mistress.

Did she pick it up or did it get its feet wet?

See the answer on Hyde DP Xtra.

Skywatch Friday: How it looked a week ago

This is how the sky looked a week ago with a bright blue sky peeking out of the clouds over the Hare and Hounds in the centre and the spire of Hyde Chapel on the right.

Now it is back to torrential rain and high winds - a typical British Summer.

Higham House

A fortnight ago I posted H & V signs that were on the wall of the Tameside Animal Shelter Charity shop.

I still haven't figured out precisely what they are but Dave Williams wrote that there were similar signs to be seen on the house at the corner of Croft Street and Great Norbury Street, so earlier this week I took a look for myself.

The building is "Higham House".

ABC Wednesday: W is for Wellington Street (Back of)

A view across the derelict land on Manchester Road from the gaps in the fence below the vandalised bus shelter (now fully repaired) I showed you last week.

I've already shown you the view looking across to Rhodes Street North.

This is looking the other way towards the top of Wellington Street, where if you check my post of May 2009 stood the Wellington Hotel.

It was demolished in December 2010 and now the house that adjoined has a new gable-end.

For more Ws visit ABC Wednesday.

Up the Back Passage

This is the passageway at the back of the Clarendon Mall leading from the indoor market to the delivery bays and Reynold Street.

Compare the eighties' red brick of the Mall extension on the left to the fifties' red brick on the right and the noughtie's light red brick of "Cotton Tree Court" in the background.

Cooke's Traditional Roundabout

"Have a long and safe ride on Cooke's traditional roundabout" it reads on the bottom.

Behind it is parked a yellow JCB being used in the renewal of Hyde Market.

In the background are the stalls on the southern half of the market ground.

The renewal is being done in two phases so there will always be half the market still trading.

The carousel is over 100 years old and has been on Hyde Market for most of that time.

It is going nowhere except round and round.

A different view of Captain Clarke's Bridge

Views of Captain Clarke's bridge over the Peak Forest Canal are usually taken from the South where it's design is more evident, or from the towpath if looking North.

This photograph was taken more than two years ago by Tom Wigley who had crossed over to the other bank in order to photograph a lost memorial to members of the St George's Sunday School Rowing Club who had lost their lives in the Second World War.

Those photographs can be seen on Old Hyde.

Weekend Reflections: Clarendon Place in the rain

Last Saturday the rain bucketed down all weekend.

At least it produced some interesting reflections around Clarendon Place.

According to the forecast the torrential rain will be here again this weekend.

Storm Clouds over Gee Cross

This was taken at the same time as my recent photo of the Hare and Hounds.

It looks a little further West towards the trees below the trig point at the junction of Werneth Low Road and Cowlishaw Road.

I used a zoom lens to reach a distance of some two kilometres. The spire of Hyde Chapel is actually about a kilometre away although the cattle seem to be grazing close to.

To highlight the dramatic effect I've introduced a few painterly touches.

Signs of the times

This was originally the Borough Inn but in more modern times it was for many years the Nawabi Balti restaurant. Half of the sign for the restaurant is still showing.

Now the front part of the building has been converted into offices for the Akeeda Group. They seem to specialise in money transfers and travel tickets to the Indian subcontinent.

However there are still "To Let" signs up for the rear portion of the building.

And of course as Edna Street is a one-way street there is no-entry sign from Market Street.

ABC Wednesday: V is for Vandalism

It must have been a powerful blow that broke the glass in the back of this bus shelter on Manchester Road.

Alas such vandalism is all too common a sight.

Bottom of Norfolk Street

Two red no entry signs at the bottom of Norfolk Street by its junction with Reynold Street.

This is the opposite corner from the one I recently posted on Hyde DP Xtra.

The offices to rent were last in use by a company offering mortgage advice but like many such businesses it has come and gone.

Kitty at Hobson Moor Quarry

Is it a mural or just graffiti?

Karl & Ali found this at Hobson Moor Quarry, a popular climbing venue on the outskirts of Mottram-in-Longdendale.

Yet another shot of the Hare & Hounds

During a brief bright respite from the rain a few evenings ago I stuck my head through the window and zoomed in on the Hare and Hounds on Werneth Low.

It has been raining pretty solidly ever since.

The last time I showed you the same view was January.

In June 2010 I posted three shots from morning, noon and night of the longest day.

Work on the Shell Filling Station

A month ago I showed you the a big red hole at the Shell filling station on Dowson Road.

The fuel tanks have now been buried and most of the hole filled in. Pipework leads to the points where the pumps will be fitted.

It looks like it will be several weeks before the station re-opens for business.

Fences around the market

The renewal work on Hyde Market continues apace.

The half of the market ground that has been paved is fenced off but roofs have now been added to the new stalls.

There is a closer look at the new stalls on Hyde DP Xtra.

H & V signs

These two signs, white letters on a blue diamond, are on the side of the building at the corner of Norfolk Street and Reynold Street.

The only other instance of a similar sign I've come across is a V sign on the former Gee Cross Post Office.

I can only think that they refer to "hydrant" and "valve" for the benefit of the fire service, but I can find no information anywhere about signs with this particular design.

The old shop is now an extension of the Tameside Animal Shelter charity shop which can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Jubilee Stiltwalker

As part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in Clarendon Mall on Saturday, this wonderfully skilled stiltwalker was parading around the shopping centre.

We've seen her before but I'm not sure whether she was Frosty or Sparkle then.

My son Craig posed for a photograph with the lady which you can see on Hyde DP Xtra.

The Cup Cake Queen of Hyde

The indoor market at Clarendon Mall organised a celebration for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on Saturday. All the stalls were decorated with union flags; there were tombolas; face-painting and more.

At the top of the upstairs ramp by the "Devon Eggs" stall cup cakes, scones and other delights were for sale, all in aid of Willow Wood Hospice.

How else would you celebrate 60 years on the throne?

Weekend in Black & White: New Market Stalls

As work progesses on the renovation of Hyde Market the bases and framework for new stalls on the Northern half of the market have gone up.

One of the cement mixers on the right seems to dominate the Town Hall on the left but this treatment serves to highlight the outlines of the work.

You can view the original photograph on Geograph.
