ABC Wednesday: C is for Christy Close

Christy Close is a development of new housing off Newton Street, named after the Christy towel brand originally manufactured at the Carrfield Mill across the road.

The mill itself is currently being demolished. See my post of 17th October 2012 for more information.

A contribution to ABC Wednesday.

  3. hello gerald - eileen from bolton here.
is this a photo of the housing estate built in the grounds of the old house on the left as you travel up newton street from hyde centre? i know there have always been mature trees there as you turn towards dukinfield road.
i haven't been past the mill sight since the builders started to remove the roof tiles. i know i'll be heart broken when i do pluck up the courage to visit. i worked there from 1966-1977 and as you can imagine i have some lovely memories.
    thank gerald

    1. Yes that is correct - I don't remember what was there before - a lot of the mill has been demolished but some remains as yet including the offices - have only been past on the bus - will get down there sometime to record the continuing demolition.

  6. Nice of someone to remember and incorporate the local history into the naming of the development. Good one for the letter C!

  7. The brand name of the towels made at Ashton Brothers' Carrfield Mill was NOT Christy - it was Zorbit. They also made babies nappies under that name as many a granny could confirm. I think I am right in saying that Christy towels are still being manufactured whilst Zorbit alas are long gone after Courtaulds took over Ashton Brothers in about 1969/70.Sorry to spoil a good story.

    1. I'm sure you are right about Zorbit but whether or not Christy towels were actually manufactured in Carrfield Mill, Welspun, who own the "Christy" brand, had their UK offices on Newton Street before re-locating to Cheadle. If they were not actually manufactured there they were definitely sold from there.
