ABC Wednesday: C is for Cordwell's Café
Cordwell's on Market Place is an amusement arcade cum café. There is another amusement arcade belonging to Cordwell's in nearby Clarendon Street but this one includes a café. At one time it was very smokey but after smoking inside was banned it was revamped and includes a toilet with disabled access. It seems though that the premises have been sold and the café is soon to close and be replaced by yet another bookies. To the left is £-stretchers in what used to be Woolworth's and is still referred to as "Woollies". To the right is the Albion public house.
Cordwell's Amusement Arcade on Clarendon Street can be seen on Hyde DP Xtra.

Love these old cafés ! It's such a pity that more and more have to close down (that's the same in Belgium) since this stupid anti smoking law came out. I mean I am not a smoker, so if I don't like the smell I wouldn't go in there. My whole life people have smoked and are getting older and older ! Reaching 100 is not an exception anymore (with cigarettes !)

Nice and timely documentation. The old order changeth alas
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to answer your comment on my WW post. A café in Belgium is equal to a pub, so people play cards, or darts or billiard or whatever ! It's just another name.
ReplyDeletemust be really a chain coz i saw one post a while ago with the same name and color of the strip. visiting from ABC Wednesday.
