This old shop on Stockport Road, Gee Cross has been closed for a few years.
It was once a butcher's shop I think and more recently a hot sandwich shop.
It used to have a bay window frontage but that has long gone and the window space boarded up. The base has been filled with soil and turned into a flower bed and a trellis attached to the window boards for climbers.

During the 1960's the right hand shop used to be Bennett's bakers, and the left hand shop used to be Jolly & Hollingworths ironmongers. Going further left, not on photo, after the passage gates was Fred Bennison's tobacconists, then left of that was Mellors chippy. To the right of the bakers, just visible as the adjoined brick building, was Eric Lyne's grocers. If memory serves right, the reason it is brick is that the original stone building was involved in a fire, and it was rebuilt in brick, though I bow to more knowledge on this.

ReplyDeleteI was in Manchester on Monday. Went up by car. Didn't notice this old shop though. Although there seemed to be quite a few empty along the road, before the houses appeared.
ReplyDeleteIs an ironmongers what I know in Australia as a hardware store? I am collecting old expressions for retail enterprises, eg green grocer instead of fruit and vegetable shop.

Hi , everyone ,i know these are very old post,s but as i was a gee-cross girl ,does anyone know if the old stockport road, metodist church, just there in gee-cross, is still standing .We had a youth club there ,wednesday and friday nights in the church hall, great happy memories ..i,d love any news and a picture would be fantastic ,thanks for so much enjoyment .
ReplyDeleteYes the Methodist Church is still there - several photos I think on here and volume 1 of HDP - if you scroll rightt down to where it says "Labels" and click on "Places of Worship" you may find one.
