Parsonage Street

The street sign for Parsonage Street.

Behind the wall was the parsonage built in 1860 as the vicarage for St George's church.

I'm informed that the 1860 vicarage was demolished between the wars and replaced with the building we can see now.

What I'm still puzzled by is why the street is called Parsonage street, yet the building is always called the vicarage not the parsonage.

A contribution to signs, signs.

  2. I too noticed the old brick walls ... and the distant fireplaces are intriguing silhouettes of the same.

  6. The 1860 vicarage was demolished between the wars and replaced with the building in the photo. There is a foundation stone to the right of the front door giving the precise date. I have happy memories of this building which was my home for 11 years (1988-99) when I was vicar of St George's.

  8. I would be puzzled by that, too. A subtle distinction between vicarage and parsonage.
