A sepia view of Grafton Street looking East past the Grafton Centre and Bangla City towards Clark Way and the Northern end of John Street.
The houses on John Street are about the only parts of this photograph that existed before the M67 motorway and the Clark Way bypass were bulldozed through this area of Hyde. Grafton Street was then a street of old terraced houses.

A very interesting background behind the street!
ReplyDeleteGrafton Street originally continued across the Clark Way bypass and met the end of John Street where you see the houses in the picture. There's a garage where they service and repair cars on the remaining bit of Grafton Street on that side of Clark Way, right at the corner with John Street. The owners of the garage recently successfully applied to Tameside Council to have that short stretch of Grafton Street renamed as part of John Street because customers looking for them on Grafton Street were unable to find them as they didn't realise that there was a short piece of Grafton Street on that side of Clark Way.
